South Park and Evolution

Tagged:  •

Lately, the writers of South Park, Matt and Trey, have been making a splash with their commentary on evolution through their elementary boy characters that never seem to age. Is it just me? Or has the content of the work gone from immature cussing from Cartman trying to get authority to 4 kids taking on the questions of all society? Nothing is sacred. Everything from who really is to blame for 9/11 to Teri Schavo and now, the real statement behind evolution. What appears to be a simple cartoon isn't. Parker and Stone have created a whole new way of looking at things, by taking the things that everyone is afraid to face and face them head on.

Shows like this are pushing the envelope and making it easier for us to deal with the problem. Instead of liberals bashing conservatives and conservatives calling the liberals unpatriotic, we can all just sit down and watch shows like South Park. Shows like South Park, Family Guy, and the Simpsons bring to light the issues. Instead of dancing around the problem and blaming things on the current president, we have to admit yeah there is a problem and something has to be done. We can't sit idle and expect things to happen. Sure it is great fun to laugh at Butters freaking out because he summoned Biggie Smalls who is going to pop him if he does't get Mr. Smalls to LA to celebrate the biggest party Satan has ever thrown. South Park shows all the weaknesses of society and all the points in which we lack. Knowledge comes from the boys, who make a mistake and then realize whoa. Things are wrong.

Society needs to be like Kyle and Stan. Lessons can be learned from the town of South Park, whether it be we have to start over in Hurricane Katrina and always rise again like Kenny, or that we can't go overboard with environmentally friendly cars, or even that young teachers having sexual relations with their students is not okay, as seen through Ike and his elementary school teacher. We need to face the issues, and by watching South Park, you exercise your personal freedom to do so. Make fun of the government and criticize society and everything it does. The only way to make change is to say something and do something. Nothing happens by just sitting still.

The new episode (and the 2nd part coming soon) don't seem to be as much about evolution as they are about religion. The lesson is obvious to see, which is even if organized religion was abolished it wouldn't end war, suffering, etc. There are "lessons" in some of the episodes, but to me, it's more about satirical society commentary than saying "What I learned today is..."

Religion does seem to be a big deal lately, since Bush's war is considered a "gihad" and religion seems to fuel what people want to do with their life and why people do a lot of things. The idea that simply god is on your side makes people do things they wouldn't normaly do, if death was on the other side and not religious heaven.

Satirical commentary is useful though, because it gets to the point that yeah we're flawed. Too many people often go through life acting as if they are perfect and that they deserve so much. No, we can't all be perfect and we can't all go to Harvard and be successful. It just happens that way.
