Why the Nuclear Deal With India?

Tagged:  •

It seems that over the past few weeks that the media has done a bad job of covering some very important stories. They neglected why the port deal is happening, which I wrote about in my previous post, and now they have neglected why President Bush singed a deal giving India Nuclear technology. At the heart of the deal the reason was not to bring India into the nuclear community and have inspections of some of their nuclear plants. What good does it do that we inspect just some of their plants, and leave the rest to do whatever the Indian government wants? The real reason the president signed such a deal is environmental. India has such a fast growing population that will surpass China, for the world’s larges population, within 50 years. The Indian economy is growing just as fast. All this growth means that India will need a lot of energy to fuel its economy. The US would be severely hurt if they had to compete with India for nonrenewable energy sources. So instead we can now get India to use Nuclear energy, meaning more oil and coal for the US.

I don't see the issue - I'm pretty sure that India is in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty, and they wouldn't be developing nuclear weapons, because they know Pakistan would do the same.

I'm actually OK with this deal. We're already competing with China for Oil, and we don't want any more competition - and if that means getting India nuclear-ized, than I guess that's what has to be done.

India did not sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty. They have already developed nuclear weapons, and announced that they have those weapons several years ago. (On the other hand, since they weren't in the treaty, there's no official reason that they shouldn't develop weapons...)

I'm of similar opinion that India, with nuclear energy, isn't a bad thing. Economically it might help, and trying to block it seems almost pointless, considering how many highly trained scientists India already has.

One Question: Why is the U.S making the nuclear deal with India when U.S is having a close relationship with Pakistan? Serious, if U.S make this kind of deal with India, then Bush should make one with Pakistan. This deal makes me feel like America wants India to have more problems with Pakistan or something.

For some reason I have not heard much about Pakistan being angry about the deal. I think that maybe things have cooled between the two countries. Also, Pakistan owes us a lot after all the aid we gave them after their earthquake. If you remember Pakistan had an earthquake last year that killed more people than the tsunami.
