I Predict A Riot

I don't have a printer, so I count on the library to print whatever I need. However, late one night I did some last minute corrections on a paper I was supposed to turn in the next day. So I woke up earlier than usual to catch the early bus so I could go to the library to print. Problem was the library wasn't open until 8 am which was the same time my class started. Needless to say, I was late, and the teacher locked the door.

So, I decided to start a petition to get the library to open at LEAST a half hour earlier. This idea was inspired by that same teacher who locked me out, so I followed through. I was pleasantly surprised at the support I got from students who agreed that half an hour wasn't going to kill the librarians. In a matter of about 15 minutes-just in the first floor of the library, I managed to get two pages, or 36 signatures if I did the math right.

I went to see some of the "big fish" at school, but none were there. That kind of pissed me off, since I was on a roll getting signatures and talking to people from ASU (All Student Union) and willing to get stuff done TODAY. Regardless, you better believe that these people will know my name by the end of next week.

Another thing that surprised me is the surprise itself that I saw in the people I talked to. It's as if no one had ever thought that this was an inconvenience, or had never realized it was until now. Or the surprise most of the administrators showed at the fact that I alone was doing this. I mean, there's only one of me and 25,000 other students at this school. I've asked people I've met in my classess to help, and so far I've gotten a few responses. Even some of the people who signed the petition asked me what they could do to help.

Then there were thos people who looked at me like I was crazy. They kind of pissed me off, too.

"Excuse me, do you have a minute?"

*Blank Stare*

"Alright. I'm starting a petition to get the library to open earlier, since most classes start at 8 am, or some even earlier and that's the time the libra-"

"Sorry, I don't agree with that..."

:o

"Well, OK. But just out of curiosity, why don't you think it's a good idea?"

"None of your business."

"Ok then, thanks for your time. And I really hope someday you'll get that dick out of your ass!"

*Laughter from his friends who did sign the petition and the people around within hearing range who also signed it.*

"You-Wait-What-I Didn't..."

I didn't bother to listen to whatever else he was going to stammer. I put on my headphones, turned on my ipod, and raised the volume.

The song that was playing was "I Predict a Riot" by the Kaiser Chiefs. Indeed, I do predict a riot-and uproar amongst students and the administration. I guess they've never experienced anything like this. Well, they better get used to it. There's no way I'm backing down now.

i think its great that your trying to get things to change...i use my library's printer as well and if they didn't open before 8 it would def, cause a problem...Good Luck!

It's not the libraries fault.

It's your professor who locked the door.

Two 24-hour print centers to make up for the fact that the two smaller ones are only open for 16 hours per day. It's really annoying though because the print centers are all inadequate because the school won't regularly spring for new printers. I know it doesn't sound so bad, but when you've a printer that prints out 300k sheets/year for 6+ years, it usually needs replacing at some point.

Yeah. My teacher was pretty strict. But considering it was a Winter class that was only like 4 weeks, AND the fact that it was a speech class, then I think it was reasonable. But the library hours are ridiculous. They're open from 8-9, when there's classess that start as early as 6:50 and classes that end at 10pm. Anyway, thanks for reading my blog. I'll update it as this whole lenghty process of getting these administartors to listen to me hits the fan. Lol!! Don't forget to rate!

Yeah... I've tried that, and it got shot down when a teacher heard about it. Apparently, we should be more responsibly and have all work ready at least two days before it's in. So, when they bring deadlines forward, we're supposed to be able to magically predict it?

You'd think these people were never students themselves...they dick us over with textbooks, with tuition, room & board...you'd think they cut us some slack. It's not like we're using that as an excuse to bullshit an assignment!!!
