October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great and all, but...why is it the only cancer that gets it's own 'month'? I do realize that the Susan G. Komen foundation has established that, but whenever I hear about 'National Breast Cancer Awareness month', I get that little nagging feeling in the back of my head, and think there should be something else. What about all of those other people that have leukemia and other diseases? Perhaps it's just me being weird, but I think that it's odd that breast cancer is the only one that has it's own 'month'.

I see your point. But I guess, it's just whoever can get there first and claim it and say 'hey this month is ours.' It's not, as far as I can see, trying to make other cancers seem less important, it's just the breast cancer advocates had the idea for that particular awareness-raising promotional campaign.

Why isnt there a 'National Diabetes Awarness Month"? Im sure its all just a ploy to get people to donate more money to their foundations. Im sure there are a lot more people that can say they've given money to a breast cancer foundation than they can say that they've donated to the Youth Diabetes Association.
I wonder if there is more we can do to spread awareness about other diseases or cancers that the other millions of people suffer from.
I think one reason that breast cancer gets so much pubilicity is who it targets... think about it.
I mean, a disease that targets mamas and sisters and wives and girlfriends... it hits so many people so close to home- I can't think of a single person who hasn't been touched, and their suffering is so much more moving because of the treatments and the side-effects and just... oh, it's just terrible.
And yes, it is to raise more money... I agree... and I'm not saying that other diseases don't deserve months. That's just my explanation of October as breast cancer awareness month.
