I think it's just good for people when they understand they can't be good at everything. There are those of us who try to achieve greatness in every academic subject and in every type of interest available to them (like sports, creative writing, art, etc). These are not simply over-acheivers. I think people who refuse to accept defeat in any subject deserve another name. Maybe...foolish?
Now don't get me wrong here, as many people seem to lately. I'm not picking on actual overacheivers or people who try their best in everything they do. It's more those who have to be the best and have to win everything or their entire world is crushed.
I've had many hobbies and extracurricular activities that I've gone through in middle and high school and now in college. I took tap and jazz dance classes for 5-6 years, was on a bowling team for while, participated in art shows, auditioned for plays, and worked on literary magazines. I've also been in fencing and soccer. Through this relay of trail-and-error I've come to realize I love the theatre, but I can't sing. I participate in soccer but, let's face it, I'm a little uncoordinated with that sport. I love drawing and art classes but my painting skills need some work.
I accept that I can't be the greatest in everything. I actually accept I'm not the greatest at everything! I get either annoyed, worried, or a mix of both when I see people who insist on excelling at everything.
The best motto for this situation is: Nobody is perfect. Live with it.
I truly believe that people who have this firm belief that they must be the best will have some health and mental health issues down the road.

I completely agree with you. It's necessary for each person to realize that there will always be people who are "better", in a sense. Though not to the extent the one's self-esteem is rendered non-existent.
I know what you mean. It can be annoying to see some one freak out over doing well, rather than exceptinally.
I have tried to be the best at everything because I have always seemed like a failure. But there will always be someone better than everyone. But I also believe that people might not be better than someone else because everyone has their own style which makes them good in what they do. I draw also. I have about 40 drawings. about 66 poems. I won an editors choice award on one which I was proud about. I have being doing it for 10 years but I am not as good as I want to be. Enough about me this is your post. I am curious to see some of your drawings if you have any pictures or anything. just out of curiosity. Another good point people are pressured to over acheive.
You shouldn't feel like a failure. Like you said, everyone has their own way of doing something. Maybe you're way just isn't everyone else's.
I draw anything. I go through phases, one week it's eagles, the next week it's scenery, the next it's abstract. If you really are interested I could probably upload a couple to photobucket and post some links. (If you want an example of some artwork I've done just look at my profile picture. That was made by assembling small pieces of color cut from magazines).
Great job winning Editor's Choice! Now that's gotta help your self-esteem.
I was meaning to ask you about your profile picture. You did a great job on it. If you would like to upload the pictures go ahead. I would love to see them. I can send you some of my drawing that I have taken pictures of through a private message or some other way. Post some links in a private message or another way I will figure out a way to do the same if you are interested!

Love comments? I do too!
I agree with your post. Striving to achieve greatness in everything one does acceptable, but expecting to be the best at it all is far fetched. Being realistic about one's success is key.
