1100 Calories In a Pecanbon Roll? Who Cares?! It's Trans-Fat Free!

California just banned trans fats in foods.

OK. I don't like trans fats either. I try to stay away from them. They are bad for you. I'd love to see laws where restaurants had to display which of their foods contained trans fats. I'm even ok with taking them out of school lunches. I know many restaurants have taken them out of their foods already; good for them! They deserve more business for it. But making it into a law is ridiculous.

Let's translate this new law.

"Hey, our people are fat and getting heart disease. Rather than encourage them to eat healthy and exercise, let's just make it illegal for restaurants to cook the way they normally do. Because, clearly, it's McDonald's fault that people eat Big Macs every day."

Don't believe me?

...The bill’s author, Tony Mendoza, a Democratic assemblyman and former fourth-grade teacher from Southern California, said he had been inspired by the number of obese children he saw in school.

"They are heavy," Mr. Mendoza said. "They eat out a lot, and you realize there are trans fats out there. You don’t want kids to start off on the wrong foot."

OK, first of all, if all you're concerned about is obesity, trans fats are not your main problem. Second, If you don't want your kids starting out on the wrong foot, then LEARN HOW TO BE A PARENT! It should not be the State of California's responsibility to raise your offspring. Feed your kids right. Encourage them to play outside and be active. Don't use McDonald's and Snickers bars as rewards for good behavior.

You wonder why 1 out of 10 couples in the world are infertile? Maybe evolution is telling us something--something along the lines of "Sorry, Humanity, but you're just too stupid to reproduce."

If you want to know why your kids are growing into self-absorbed monsters with no sense of how to battle life's problems on their own or face the consequences for their own actions, take a look in the mirror.

This is not a health regulation. This is people being lazy. This is the Government catering to a generation who looks for a quick fix for everything, because it's easier than doing real work.

p.s. Dear McDonald's, I'm sorry I picked on you. I know you've started taking trans fats out of your products on your own. All by yourself, without a law. Good for you!

I totally agree with you. I don't know what else to say.

Put down the burger and start walking..don't use donuts as weights...etc etc. This is a stupid thing to do. People really need to start watching what they are eating instead of watching what is on their fork!! I really can't stand how society has turned out to be...

haha I can just imagine someone at the gym bench pressing some donuts, taking a bite each time the bar goes down...

Society needs to stop putting blanket bans on every problem issue. A parent education program or something would be a lot more beneficial to everyone.

The only problem I see with this (and it's probably not even a valid point; it's more like a really bad excuse) is: *insert whine here* "Fast food is easy."

At my school cafeteria, a cheeseburger is 1.50. Any of the salads which have any hope of actually occupying space in my stomach are 2.50-3.50. Companies have to stop profiting crazily from "Healthy" labels and bring the price down on the right choices before anyone will make it a habit.

I've started making a habit of bringing my own lunch, which saves money all around. But if people really want to start getting healthier, we all have to learn to make the sacrifice of taking more time to eat, and maybe even cook, a meal that will be healthier, instead of just copping out of our responsibilities and wolfing down a Mcfish sandwich (Oh , do I detest those... *gag*).

Making your own lunches is a great idea. It's probably healthier than most school cafeteria options, and it's cheaper.

If you take the time to actually prepare meals, healthy food isn't very expensive. Especially when you do what I do and make a ton of food and freeze meals. My grocery store also sells frozen fruits and veggies that are packaged without preservatives, so they're healthy. They're also the store brand, so they're cheap already, and they also go on sale all the time. Those don't even take a lot of preparation. And the George Foreman grills are pretty excellent for quickly cooking meats. I always wrap my meat in aluminum foil so it doesn't dry out while "grilling." It also makes clean up a lot easier.

Sometimes I go to Wendy's and get a baked potato, a salad, and some chili. It's $3 and it's relatively healthy. I'm sure it's full of preservatives, but it sure is tasty. ;-)

McFish sandwiches are nothing to sneeze at, but I was pretty sad that Arby's didn't have their own fish sandwiches on the menu this past spring. I look forward to those every year, and it didn't happen. It's the only thing at Arby's worth eating. ;-)

Making your own lunch is definitely a lot cheaper. And most probably healthier, too, if you're careful not to pack yourself junk food. I fell out of the habit of making my own lunches, but I think I want to start again, because my mom made me a lunch for the first time in years the other day, and brought it to work for me. It was not only delicious, but it actually gave me an energy boost. Yay healthiness!

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

Passing a law for every little thing does nothing but take away our freedom. Sure, trans-fats aren't good for you, but why shouldn't I be able to choose what I want to put in my own body? Some of these laws are just getting completely ridiculous. Our country is not comprised of infants incapable of making their own decisions, why do we have to be treated that way?

To be honest, sometimes, I wonder about that... especially when considering the people I encounter every day...

Maybe it's that being treated as infants makes them act like it......it's a never-ending cycle. It drives me crazy that the US is so good at blaming everyone else for their own mistakes. "McDonald's made me eat all that fatty food!"

Actually, a Big Mac sounds pretty good right now.....

I think the government should make social gatherings illegal. That way no one will succumb to peer pressure.

Brilliant, n'est-ce pas? ;-)
