I was sort of surprised when I read debatechick's blog about being disappointed in progressiveu bloggers. I understand if we saw these personal attacks, but I haven't seen them. Maybe I have been lucky in the blogs that I have chosen to read that they were realatively new and didn't have any comments, but I really didn't see what she was speaking of. If you have an example, I'd like to see just for evidence.
Also, I think it's important to note that a lot of people get intense in their debate about a subject that we sometimes forget debate etiquette (hey if the President can do it for the presendential debates we can slip up a few times too). Though I haven't seen exactly what she's talking about, if it's out there I definitely agree that we shouldn't let the scholarship competition cause us to make enemies out of one another.
I do remember commenting on one blog saying that I believed the opinion wasn't very progressive (I think it was something about keeping our mouths shut about Iraq) but I would never think of attacking a person's character. I think we all have strong character for even being on this cite and voicing our opinions. So if that blog at all referred to me, I deeply apologize, but we should consider that this is a cite for debate. However, debate in the mature sense not the name-calling childish sense.

If you haven't seen the blogs she mentioned, then count your blessings and continue to enjoy this site. The hurtfulness didn't come from any debate or arguing going on in the replies; it was in the blogs them selves (i.e. so-and-so should be disqualified as a title - and there were lots of them).
There is no need to go hunting these down.

They were there, and she had every reason to be dissapointed. I don't blame her. It started with one of my blogs-and then turned into 2 users constantly starting more things on other blogs. There is one user that finds it necesary to try to start things with me on every single blog that I comment. Be glad you haven't seen it, the immaturity of the user is enough to make you lose a few brain cells just from reading it.
I've seen too much of it on the blogs I've seen and even some have disappointing comments have been posted by others on my blogs. Dissenter and oediphus were quite nasty to me when I first began blogging and it's been disappointing that people have constantly been fighting back and forth on every single blog. If you want to see a couple of examples of some of what I think debatechick was talking about, look at the posts made by dissenterin the beginning of my Bullied Victims Have Lifelong Effects blog, some of the comments in my Israel vs. Lebanon blog, and possibly some of the comments and definitely the name calling on Red's new blog, Greed ProgressiveU. I think that debatechick feels a bit the same way that I do. I feel that you can get your point across without being nasty about it, calling names, and making enemies. How progressive is calling people names, acting childish, and making enemies when this site is supposed to promote making progress in the world. I don't think that fighting over a certain issue in a blog is very progressive.
