As a result of our fast-paced America we seem to be inventing illness. We cannot focus on anything for longer than five minutes, and to cure our impatience we take drugs that dull our minds and erase our personality. Perhaps ADD and ADHD stem from a culture were children are not at leisure to spend more than ten minutes with their parents at a time. Is this to be the unconscious lesson we are teaching to the next generation?
If we aren’t given patience, how are we to express it? When everything in our culture screams, “move faster!” (Fast food, faster internet connection, fast moving TV shows and fast cars) how are we to say, “wait” if we can’t do even it ourselves?
In the 1950’s the average amount of time that a camera would remain in one position was 7 seconds, today it is less than 4. Children are virtually being forced into attention deficit disorder by, not only the media, but by their parents as the idea is always, “rush, rush, rush.” It is time to turn of the TV, quit the second job, and spend time with the next generation for the future is in their hands. Instead of rushing to the gym walk the dogs with the family. Instead of eating out, make dinner. Taking these necessary steps to slow the world down will increase the amount of patience we have, and instill the values of family in the leaders of tomorrow.
As a Result of Our Fast-Paced America
