Super Tuesday: What You Need to Know!

Super Tuesday is coming up and I hope you're going to the polls!

Below is a list of states hosting primaries on Super Tuesday (February 5, 2008) and general information that you may find helpful.

States hosting open primaries
Alabama
Georgia
Tennessee
Arkansas
Colorado
Alaska
Illinois
Minnesota
Missouri
North Dakota

For these states, you may vote in the primary regardless of your party affiliation, but you may only vote in one primary. If you vote in the Democratic primary, you cannot then vote in the Republican primary.

Closed primaries
Arizona
California
Connecticut
Delaware
New Mexico
New York
Oklahoma
Utah

For Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma and Utah, you must be affiliated with the party in order to vote in the primary. If you aren't registered as a Republican, you can't vote in Republican primaries. If you aren't registered as a Democrat, you can't vote in Democrat primaries.

For Massachusetts, those registered as Independents may choose which primary they will vote in (primaries are only open to Independents, Democrats and Republicans). Registered Democrats and Republicans may only vote in their party's primaries. In NJ, if you haven't declared affiliation, you may do so at the polls the day of the election. If you've declared as an Independent you aren't eligible to vote in the primaries. Kansas, Idaho and New Mexico will be holding Democratic Party primaries only. In New Mexico, you must be affiliated with the Democratic party to be eligible to vote in the primary.

Other

If you aren't registered to vote yet but are eligible, you can't vote in primaries this time, but it's not too late to get registered so that you may vote in the Presidential election in November!

If you aren't sure where you should go to vote, check out the Polling Locator at Vote411 or call your county clerk. If you don't know how to get in touch with your county clerk, check out the NACo Find a County search for information on county officials in all 50 states

And finally, if you think that you are eligible to vote this time but run into problems, ask about a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots may be provided to you if there are questions about your eligibility. The rules for provisional ballots vary by state, but it never hurts to ask!
