My family believes that education is the best gift anyone can give and receive. Thus, it is a family tradition for my parents at least to financially help siblings and relatives finish college.
But anyone can share the gift of education at a larger - global - scale. This can be done through the organization called Better World Books (BWB). Reciprocity is at work, because though ironic it may seem, this is one of the best fundraising and charitable drives. You collect textbooks from all over campus by setting up boxes wherein people drop in their books; you then pack the books in boxes which BWB provides - they even pay for UPS shipping. You will just receive the directions; they are very easy. Each textbook that qualifies (usually they accept publication year 2000 and above, though there are exceptions) will earn you about $.75-$1.00. What happens to the books? They are then resold or donated to Africa, etc. The funds are used for shipping the needed books to Africa, the tsunami victims of Asia/Africa, and/or the Hurricane Katrina victims. Therefore, children of the aforementioned areas benefit. They really need our help.
Do you know that as many as 4-10 kids in Africa's poor regions share just one book? So our books and even monetary donations really make a difference.
Thus, I recommend each university to participate in this book drive. It will help educate the needy youth here within the United States as well as in Third World countries. This experience will also help educate ourselves as we will learn more about leadership and cooperation. Let this not be about the money at all, because that will make the work harder. Let this be about the act of giving and feeling good about it all.
