progress

one thing that i have noticed is that america is in dire need of a reverse congress, a progress, if you will, whose sole purpose is to do away with ridiculous, erroneous, or outdated laws. the following are laws that have been instated by our government and are listed at www.stupidlaws.com:

There is a law in Illinois that prohibits a number of things, one of which is a public erection, and another one of which is nude dancing. The prohibition against the public erection has never been challenged in the Supreme Court, but the prohibition against nude dancing has.

In Ohio, if you ignore an orator on Decoration day to such an extent as to publicly play croquet or pitch horseshoes within one mile of the speaker's stand, you can be fined $25.00.

In Devon, Connecticut, it is unlawful to walk backwards after sunset.

While it is legal for theaters to show movies on a Sunday, it is only legal so long as (1) they have a permit from either the city or the county and (2) at least once monthly they show a religious or educational film.

Hunting camels is prohibited in Arizona.

In Marshalltown, Iowa, horses are forbidden to eat fire hydrants.

It is illegal for a man to give his sweetheart a box of candy weighing less than fifty pounds in Idaho.

There is a law on the books of TENNESSEE that says a man must run in front of a vehicle that a woman is driving, and, that the car may not go faster than five miles an hour!

w t f guys. wtf.

When did Arizona have camels? I would LOVE to know the background stories on some of these. Like, why did it become necessary to legislate against twilight backwards-walking? Was this really a problem behavior?

it's not actually a law, but camels really were in AZ in past times, in Quartzite, I believe. Snopes has a pretty good article on it.

I live near a loading dock and hear that all the time, so it struck me as ESPECIALLY funny!

I feel your pain. Juneau is a large valley with a channel in the middle of it. everything has to be shipped in. At three in the morning, they unload the barge, and sound travel farther and more clearly at night. You can hear the BEEP! BEEP! from a mile and a half away because of the acoustics.

Remember that alot of these 'stupid laws' are twisting what is ACTUALLY the law.

They're meant for the sake of humor and, with very few exceptions, are not ACTUALLY the law.

there are laws both in state and the national constitutions that it would be prudent to remove, as opposed to amending them, so they better fit the times. i mean we are paying these people to run our government, does it really need to be more complex? i would rather it be more simple. eventually a computer is going to do all of this stuff for us, with little input from human hands. if it is illegal to imitate animal calls in miami, you could possibly get busted for whistling, because technically birds do whistle.

Oh, I don't know that it would be wise to 'remove' laws.

Ammending them or passing another law that voids them is much safer.

If we can just 'remove' a law, what keeps us from removing other things in our governmental documents?

The bill of rights comes to mind. There are many who are itching to remove that 'pesky' 2nd Amendment.

I state it differently.

You take my guns from my cold, dead hands or one round at a time. The choice is yours.

well that is what i was trying to say, but the damn edit button refused to give me entry. there was a "can" left out of my initial reply. but here is another one:

Strange. I remember someone blogging about this exact topic two days ago. In fact....that was me. Hey, reuse of some topics is cool and all, but this first sentence almost seems a little like plagiarism, not to be a jerk or anything.

I still think your a good blogger and have done pretty well for a newbie, but I figured I'd say something.

well i read it from a harper's magazin a year and a half ago. so we are both plagiarizing that issue of that magazine. and in fact howard zihn also said it in a book, i cannot remember the title. nothing on line is original, or nearly original anymore. get used to it.

maybe i should link your blog to mine, because i was really just trying to exemplify your blog. i read your blog. i am reading it again right now. all i really took from your blog was the pro/con bit. i used different laws, that are actually in place in other states. and i even expanded upon it to inlcude a national level also, which by the way, the us of a really is supposed to be a federation, hence federal government, especially after the pre-civil war battles over nationalism, and federalism. but that is another story and we should save that for another time.

awesome blog :] it made me laugh and proved a valid point i believe all thinking americans could relate to.

you should check out Bridge's blog also. i think that it is more well written and she did obviously take more time on it.

This is the first time I have laughed so hard this week. So thanks for the blog.

I think the reason for laws is to prevent situations and such that were accuring and becoming a big problem of the time and location. I can see this for the walking backward at night law. Maybe alot of people were getting seriously hurt and causing undo rucuse once upon a time by walking backwards at dusk...hence this silly law.

I heard Nebraska has a law on the books about car drivers having to have a shovel at all times and that in TX you can hit your wife as long as the bruis us smaller then a thumb or something like that.
