Basketball playoff's... they're a pretty funny thing.
I'm from Dallas, and I would be lying if I said I didn't watch every single game and root for the Mavericks and hold a small grudge against anyone or anything from Phoenix. When, however, does our loyalty to a sports team go too far?
I was in San Antonio for 3 of the 7 games from the 2nd series... I feared for my life. I went to a bar with some friends to watch the games, and every single time, I noticed people giving me dirty looks for smiling when Nowitski made a shot or Duncan missed... I wasn't even making a really big deal about it.
The other night at Pheonix, some Suns fans started harassing Avery Johnson's (the Mavs' coach) wife and children. This is ridiculous, and I can't believe that these friendly games have turned into situations in which people need to be afraid of what their opponents may do to them.
Sportsmanship... ha! These players are starting fights and pushing and shoving on the court... what is supposed to be a friendly competition is becoming much more. I'm scared to see what will happen in the next few years.

I just wrote a blog about sports hooligans today, you should check it out.
Unsportsmanlike behavior is nothing more that people with emotional problems not being able to control their thoughts, feelings and behavior. They are mentally weak. But it is not confined to sports arenas. Road rage, workplace violence, domestic abuse are all named for the place they happen. To change society, we should use sports as a powerful medium to have kids practice self-control. There is a way to do that can be found at www.getpsychedsports.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
