A spam from Jesus...

I just got a spam e-mail from Jesus.  Needless to say I was more than a little disturbed by the strange turn of events.  Over the past few weeks I've recieved hundreds of spam e-mails (nothing outside of the norm here) but this one really threw me for a loop.  Never mind that a moment later it occured to me that it probably wasn't actually from the christain Jesus god type person, but rather it was a spammer using the hispanic name 'Jesus' (pronounced he-soos') trying to convince me that someone I knew wanted me to know that I could lose weight, get the body I wanted and save money at the same time--all of this was in the heading mind you, lord knows what wonderful secrets I could have discovered if I'd actually opened the e-mail.  Instead I deleted it and went on with my morning routine as though nothing had happened.

This seems like nothing out of the ordinary.  The only thing about the incident that left it in my head was the first name, Jesus.  I didn't think about the advertising, the insinuation that I (along with every other American) needed to lose weight, that I was unhappy and that to top it all off I was broke and unhappy.  I didn't thhink about the udnerlying social problems that could be associated with a culture of need and instant marketing ploys to satisfy every possible or probable ailment, mental and physical.  Then I thought about it for a moment, for all time and eternity there have been 'magic' cures for warts, love potions to ensure that you land just the right person (or that you like the person Dad picked out for you) since sculpture was first envisioned there has been an ideal female form and the perfect male body to go with her.  Beauty has been an absolute and misery something given to people by fate, and easily solved if the world outside can just behave.

Our modern culture thrives off of that idea, marketers find thier businesses booming because of it.  Every new drug can solve every 'new' problem, weight, poor eyesight, wrinkles, bladder control issues, high blood pressure, sagging body parts, difficulty breathing, lack of excersize, you name it there is a marketable solution to the problem.  We of course are completely innocent, there is nothing we need to do, no way we need to change.  If we just shell out the cash all our problems will be solved.

After all, Jesus says so--spam e-mail is the ultimate marketing tool.  Everytime we communicate with friends, co-workers and anyone we find ourselves subjected to the marketing ploys of a society dependant on 'magic' drugs, treatments etc. to solve all of our problems.

It's kinda scary all the marketing ploys that are floating around out there - they're everywhere, on television, in magazines, on billboards, and of course on the internet and in spam. We all want more, bigger, better and right now. I am just very thankful to Yahoo's bulk e-mail folder.

Have you heard of the Pharmacutical companies that actually make false news stories placed in the nightly news just to freak people out to get their sales up?
