Death to technology

Maggieb808's picture

I realize the advances technology has done for our medical society. Prolonging life when life may not need to be prolonged. I see people everyday I pass on the street who I'm just a few years their elder and already they speak a different language i cannot comprehend. I cannot view an iPod commercial as a new dance step. Death to the fox trot and death to the blues. Let's let accolades be present where accolades are deserved, but where do they need to go? Up towards an endless sky that piece by piece is falling down to the ground around us.
One of my favorite lyrics from any songs is by Brand New, the song is called, "The Archers Bows have Broken" there is a line in this song that makes me think tell me what you think about it.
Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Or do you carry it around just to burn things down?
Anarchy used to be around but now we have more Starbucks than art shows. And the sad part is that more people want to the coffee, their legalized drug to get through the day. I do my part day by day with my pieces of civil disobedience just little stickers with little worlds to try to change big hearts. But I have found out that big hearts are already calcified and will sooner fall apart than change their ways.

So.... to make sure I understand..... you're on an internet weblog, using a computer, to discuss 'death to technology' because people go to starbucks rather than embrace anarchy?

No my mere thoughts are to how we as a civilization are in a time of planned obsolescense. We build things knowing that they will break. Roman roads are still intact but to contact with my family I must get a new cell phone every 2 years. I appreciate what we have in our western civilzation, but it's something in in itself when it has become the staple from which we live off of. I do see the irony blogging on a computer but sadly if I wrote the correspondence through the letter when would you receive it?

Not to be combative, but you do not need to get a new cell phone every two years. You can still use the same telephone landline. You CHOOSE to have a cell phone, and that choice ought not to be one that is looked down upon, as you are doing what you wish with your money. The essence of freedom.

As for western civilization, we are the most advanced society to ever exist. Lots of people like to snipe at those on the top, which is why is it a trend to pooh-pooh Western Civilization.

We are the most advanced because we embrace freedom.

That people choose to conform to one another does not affect whether or not they ought to be allowed to.

It is a virtue of our society that we allow people to gather together as they see fit, and only prosecute those who would defile that freedom.

As for written correspondence.... that kind of proves why technology is beneficial.

Non living things are neither good nor evil (even guns!) . . . it is all about how they are used and who uses them.

That's a story as old as time.

You've got moxie and I love it! I hope to be able to have more input through our work in the future! If I may ask, what are you taking in school?

I chose to go without a cell phone for a while, the expressions people give you when you tell them you don't have a cell phone is hilarious! In fact, I wouldn't have a cell phone now if someone else hadn't insisted (they're paying the bill, so I guess I'll take it in case the car breaks down). I honestly hate having the thing ring at the most inopportune times.

I've had the same phone for three years, and it's still in great shape. I don't know what you do to need a new one every two years...

I have a six year old so they have been thrown and flushed. I also do hate the notion of a dog tag in cellular form but like you, mine is being paid for and I rarely use it. I feel text messages are satan's minions!! I feel sad to see the people who keep it clutched to their hearts like the paddles that will bring them back to life when it rings....clear, hello?

I have a 5 year old, and I've had my cell phone for 2 years, and the only reason I have a new one is because my old phone company went out of business. I actually have the old one, and it still works. I don't see the relationship between having children and having broken phones, unless you're not supervising your kid.
