100 out of 220 students in an elementary school in my community did not go to school today due to the flu. Another 250 students in other schools throughout the school system were at home sick. Therefore, the school board closed school until next Wednesday in order to allow sick students to get well and avoid endangering the other students. Before this incident, the school board called each home alerting parents to the dangers of the flu and asking that they do not allow students to go to school if they are experiencing any flu like symptoms.
Unfortunately, the aforementioned numbers of sick students is a result of the disregard for others health. However, it is only fair to blame the school system as well, since children are only allowed to miss a certain number of days, and even when they return, they find themselves overwhelmed with make-up work. So I think that closing the schools is the best action anyone can take, because it does not offend anyone and allows everyone a small break and recovery time.

Wow! thats a HUGE sum of kids with the flu. Flu is scary, my boyfriend has it terribly, he cant even walk! Where I live, the health department was providing flu shots and RAN OUT the first day, which is crazy, they really should provide more. That is so weird that the school had to shut down, but if only a small handful of kids were going to attend then that is understandable. Sickness is so scary
