Living as a disabled person in a more or less disabled society

Hello everyone,
I am not posting this blog for the feeling of sympathy. I am posting it for awareness. I believe that everyone should know how difficult it is to be disabled in today's society. I am a wheelchair bound person, and have been so all of my life. I am writing to make a statement about how disabled this society really is. For example, last February, I took a trip with my best friend to Washington D.C. Let me just say that I was quite dismayed upon arriving. On one really sunny yet freezing day, my best friend and I decided that it would be fun to take a trip to the museum. Well, on our way there, we walked (well, he walked, I rolled) upon sidewalks that were as thin as the gymnastics balance beam (which is only 4 inches wide). So meanwhile, only one WHEEL was fitting on the sidewalk--So annoying! So, finally, we get to the entrance, but we find that there are NO handicapped entrances in the front. When my best friend asked about the ramps, he was told we had to go around to find access. So, after walking and rolling on the paper thin sidewalks, we had to go AROUND the building just to get in! It was possibly the most aggravating situation. I am not one to usually complain, but come on, this is our nation's capitol, shouldn't we be set up to accommodate the physically disabled? And other thing that frustrates me is the movie theaters. Granted, some of them do have elevators where you can ride to the top, but so many of them are not available to the movies I want to see. So, since I am disabled, I am subjected to having a crick in my neck? lol.. I'm just saying. It is my ultimate dream to find a place in this supposed land of opportunity that is totally catered to the disabled. It would be really nice and perhaps luxurious, to find a place where there are ramps adjacent to every entrance as well as electric doors. Boy, that would be a dream come true, but I guess I just have to keep dreaming, huh? ;)

Good blog! I agree, this country needs to be more accessible to disabled people. I, myself, am not disabled but I do think on a day to day basis about ym surroundings. I find myself looking for ramps and automatic doors. I guess I am looking out for the disabled. To add onto that, what about expectant mothers? Many times they are hindered by pregnancy to use the true extent of their physical capability. I have been seeing "Expectant Mother" parking spots which are painted pink, so I think that is nice. It still doesn't cover all the missing ramps and automatic doors, and apparently sidewalks wide enough to fit a wheelchair! Our country needs to focus more on those in need, rather than those who aren't.

Après la pluie le beau temps.
