What I'm giving for Christmas (Shhhh, don't tell!)

So lately I've been thinking a lot about the environment, Christmas, giving, sea turtles who are deformed by plastic in our oceans (http://www.bestlifeonline.com/cms/publish/travel-leisure/Our_oceans_are_...) and all those usual things I blog/think about. The more I think, the more I realize the last thing my family needs this holiday season are more plastic Thneeds, which the Lorax reminds us are "fool things that nobody needs..."

So I found a solution; while looking at a midwifery website called Spinningbabies.org, I noticed a little ad off to the side about a little thirteen yr old daughter of a midwife who died and how her parents are trying to get as many people as possible to sponsor a child in her honor, because while she was still alive she sponsored several children herself, with her allowance money. This reminded me of when I was a little kid and how I used to do the same thing (I have had several kids in India that I sponsored with the little bit of allowance I had.) I nearly cried when I went to the website and saw all the sweet little girls and boys you can sponsor so that they can have supplies for school, uniforms, healthcare, food and so on. So I immediately called my family and asked if sponsoring a kid in their names was ok with them, rather then buying them something silly, like a book on menopause or something (my family tends to give odd gifts as it is.) They all thought that was a great idea; what they don't know is I am also busy knitting hats for them! I am so excited about sponsoring a child again, for awhile there, I had lost all my hopefulness that the world could be a better place...I was becoming a nilistic adult!!! Now I've got hope again...my eyes shine with the possibilities that the future can be a better, brighter place then the world was before!

I also applied to work at a woman's shelter for now, and I got excepted! I'm very excited about this as well, since I'll be giving locally as well as globally! I can't wait to start working with women in seemingly hopeless siduation to help them get their lives together and work for something better! I know that this is going to be a lot of work; especially emotionally, but I have a feeling it will be rewarding as well!

I have also reciently agreed to be a free doula for a woman who is pregnant and due at the end of December or beginning of January...she's been homeless for the past five years and probably needs a lot of help and support! I'm very excited as we enter this season of sharing and giving that I have all of these new opportunities opening up to be of assistance to people who could really use my help!

Cool!

What's the precise website for sponsoring kids? Might make a good gift. I've volunteered at domestic violence shelters as well; good luck, and thank you.

Now THIS is progressive! I'm glad there's still people like you out there.

Btw, what is a doula?

Doula is a old Greek word that means "female slave..." It used to be the female slave that the women of the house trusted the most, so she would help with birth...

These days it is someone who is an emotional support person at a birth...I am professionally trained to help with massage, acupressure points, positions that help with pain, visualization and so forth.

The end of December I am helping a couple (ironically enough, their names are Mary and Joe...) with the birth of their first baby...they are recovering Meth accidicts and I am worried that their baby might be taken immediately away from them...

As for the website, I would recommend World Vision...I know first hand that they are a good organization who manages their funds well...I've seen them working in Africa. Go to www.worldvision.org for more info.
