The Disney Let down

Last Spring I got accepted to go on an amazing adventure. I was going to be working and living at the "Wonderful World of Disney" or "The Happiest Place on Earth". Well, to cut a long story short. Working for Disney is a load of crap. It was the worst job I have ever had. I had to work 10 to 11 hour days 6 days a week. Keep in mind I'm only 18 and I wasn't used to a work load like that. My particular work place was Casey's Corner in the Magic Kingdom. I took this job because I was told I would be gaining valuable work experience later in life..... Working at Casey's Corner I sold Hot Dogs. Since I'm planning on being a teacher I don't see how that could help me later in life at all. The interaction with the customers wasn't even remotely positive. It seems to me that once a person enters the Magic Kingdom they lose all manners or commen sense. Customers are rude and they drop food.... they fill up these huge cups full of ketchup and then leave them upside down on the counters. That's not the worst part, I was told in my interviews that living at Disney (hundreds of miles from home) would be a safe and happy environment. Rent was $70 a week and they took out another $80 in taxes every week. That left me with about $40 - 50 a week to spend on gas, and food and fun. The apartment complex I was assigned to was the lowest of Disney'scomplex's. It was built decades ago and has never been upgraded. There was a constant trail of ants in the kitchen getting on everything and roaches in all the other rooms. They did have an exterminator, we called him 9 times during my 3 month stay and the bugs never went away. There was a security team at the complex, but they didn't do any good. At one time while I was there an employee was fired for stealing thousands of dollars from one of the cash registers. That Employee went back to his apartment and robbed 3 of his roommates at gun point. For some reason this kid was able to sneak a gun past security. For two weeks the ex-employee was on the loose in the complex robbing other kids whenever he needed more money. The cops never came in to assit because Disney kept it hush hush. We were told that if we went to the media or anyone like that or even if our parents did we would be fired. My parents wanted to come and bring me home, but I was able to talk them out of it. I had met really good friends down there and I hated to say goodbye. 3 months into my 5 month term I had finally had enough so I gave a 2 weeks notice and 3 days later Disney called me in and fired me. I was kicked out of my apartment and put on the street. Thank god my friends were able to drive me to a hotel, then I just had to pay out of pocket for my hotel room until my parents could come and rescue me 2 days later.

How horrid. I considered doing the entire Work at Disney thing 2 years ago but after actually seeing the "great benefits" they offered, quickly decided there was no way I was giving up my higher paying job and cool apartment for 5 months in hell. I'm amazed that they get away with the crap they do.

I wonder if all that was what Walt had in mind when he started cartooning. It's a shame what happens to people's businesses when they get all 'corporatified.'

Isn't it surprising what can go on in what you would think to be a good company without it being known or even suspected by the general public?

Sorry you had such a bad time down there.
