Self Respect. An ancient tradition?

Tagged:  •

As spring break approaches MTV has started its quality televison. With whipped cream bikini contests. But all of this reality TV has me wondering if dignity was simply a passing trend. Society seems to preach to us that to stand out we need to strip down. That's not just in terms of clothing, it also deals with our morals.

Women are no longer given the same respect that they used to in society. While men continue to have a stronghold in the workplace, women are often not given an equal standing and are subjected to constant criticism about the validity of their position. But for all the positive advancement that's being made there is just as much regression in the female situation do to the pressure of society to be the girl it expects. The claim is that men want women that respect itself but the projection to the younger generation is that to be anyone you have to show it all.

There needs to be a higher standard that women are held to in order to ensure that they are actually setting an example for generations to come.

Not everyone's like that. Personally, I'd rather have a normal (read: safe) weighted girl than a skinny-almost-dying-and-half-bolemic girl. You don't need to make yourself throw up to make me happy :). I appreciate the effort, though.

I think a big part of the problem is underconfidence - girls now seem to think they are inferior or worthless, so to fulfill the void, they do some stupid things. I find it all mind-boggling, because I cannot imagine throwing up to lose weight or having stick a hot knife to me so I can look better.

Unfortunately, no girls that I've met thus far that I've had interest in share the same views. You don't need to dump 40 pounds of toxic chems on your face to make me go all googley eyed. Make-up is a big turn off to me, and I think more and more men are going to catch on to that idea. If you are in the mindset that you need to dump that many chems on your face, you're clearly too un-laidback for my tastes.

If a society is willing to give freedom for temporary security, they deserve neither.

I don't think that I was saying that girls HAVE to be skinny or look a certain way. I was saying that the media no longer programs positive female images, it's laden with negative images of women. Don't believe me? Check out America's Next Top Model, 8th and Ocean, The Real World or The OC. The idea of beauty is being perfect which is an honestly unattainable goal. I think by making the statement that you like a girl to look a certain way you perpetuate the same thing that you try to get away from.
