Well, I'm pretty sure that all of my blogs are going to be inspired by others' blogs now but oh well. This one was from a discussion of To Catch a Predator. Now I know, the guys they catch on this show are a threat to society, and it is almost certain that they will prey on young children. But I still can't help but wonder, is it right that we convict them. Most of the time it is an overage policeman working online as a young child. So in reality these men aren't actually chatting with someone underage and even though they believe they are going to commit a crime against an underage child they really aren't.
So this leads me to the question which we need to ask ourselves, do we want to be able to convict people on their intentions. The example I gave earlier was this:
You're driving down a road on which you believe the speed limit to be 40mph, and you are going 60 mph, intentionally because you are late. However, you hadn't seen the sign that said the real speed limit was 65mph. So you tell me. Are you guilty?
Let's face it. I don't think we want to open up a can of worms where we can be convicted of our potential danger of society.
Just a tad bit frightened of "though police".
