Overproduction and underconsumption.
These were the causes for the Great Depression, which began with the Stock Market crash in 1929. Currently, our country is in a recession, and have been for a debateable amount of time, at least half a year. We are all well aware that overproduction and underconsumption leads to layoffs, which lead to poor consumers, which leads to more layoffs. So the spiral continues, and if jobs are not found, we may very well find ourselves in another depression. When the recession hits the third or fourth year mark, this is inevitable. How do we find jobs in a society that has not enough to offer to the already employed? This is a difficult task, for those in careers with no immediate need. Students are often the first hit with layoffs as well, as they do not have families to support.
As I searched for a job for summer, my goal was to provide for my education. As an adult searches for a new job after layoffs, the goal is to support a family, make payments, and buy essential items, possibly saving for retirement. It is disheartening to go around to many restaurants in a town, ask for any openings, and repeatedly hear a resounding "no." There is simly not enough business for businesses to need extra workers, as they have in the past. I consider myself lucky that I found a job in March for summer at my past employer. I looked for a second job, because one is not enough to cover the rising cost of a college education, I realized it was simply not happening. I now feel blessed to have even the one. These are hard times, who knows what the future may bring.
