Student Athletes

Today in my interpersonal communications class we watched a movie....BORING! But since we were able to do extra credit on the video I paid attention. It was a 20/20 episode on the priveledged of the United States. Some of the groups they talked about were the people born into rich families, white people, celebrities and athletes, students and professional.

I don't know about any of you but in my hometown Friday night meant a football game. The football players were put up on a pedastool. And, apparently this practice is not uncommon. They shared a story of 3 football players who caused an accident by putting a fake deer in the middle of the road and waited for something to happen. Someone swerved to avoid it, rolled their car and both occupants of the car had severe injuries. The players ran away.

The punishment they were to get was 60 days in a juvenile detention center. Their punishment was postponed til after football season and they were allowed to play the rest of the season.

WHAT! If anyone else in that high school had done that they would have been sent to the detention center right away. What judge in their right mind would let them wait, let alone play football for the rest of the season. The school let them play as well. America is supposed to be a world of equal opportunity, but apparently athletes get it better. '

Did anything like this ever happen in your high school, or at your college? I think it's crazy. In my school academics are very important and our football coach understands that, thats why he's up for coach of the year.

Yup, it happened at my school too. There were a group of guys on the football team and they came to some school function completely drunk. They all got off the hook and were not suspended from playing football. Come to think of it, I think they got out of any punishment all together! Crazy, huh?
