Is Society Making Us Go To College?

As individuals, most of us blame the media for making society the way it is and thinks. But what about the issues that the media doesn’t influence the society to believe and act? Most of us on this site are blogging to win scholarships for schools we can hardly afford. But what made us want to attend college? Was it our desire for the expansion of knowledge? For the college experience? Because we do not know what we want to pursue in life and college is a time consumer till we do? Or is it simply because society, schools, and friends are pressuring us too?

I remember sitting in my government class in high school and our college career advisor came in to speak to our class. She was going around talking to all the classes that week. She gave us a calendar with due dates for applications and Cal Grants and the FAFSA form. Every month after that the advisor would come into the class and help us fill out applications and forms for college. She spoke to us like this was the next step after graduation, unlike the old days when students had the choice to start working and experience life or go to college and get a degree. Nowadays, everyone assumes you are going to college and if you don’t plan to they see you as an undetermined worker.

Students who are going to college to waste time and don’t really want to be there but are because their parents and friends are expecting them too takes up space that students who do want to be there can use. Getting accepted into schools has now become more competitive and harder to get into. More students are crammed into a tiny dorm room.
Why is it that we MUST go to college? My personal reason to go is because I enjoy learning and the atmosphere of a school, and a part of it is because all my friends go to college. What are your views? And why are you choosing to go to college?

im going to go to uc santa cruz next year but i have friends that go there now. A lot of kids go there to smoke and party and do psychadelic drugs becuase they think they're hippies and what have you. They forget that its college and since my friends are freshmen they're seeing the worst.

College is great and everyone should take advantage of the opportunity if they can.

Personally, I am going to college because I really love to learn. I know that makes me a big nerd, but hey. I wish that kids who didn't want to go to college would just not go (more room for meee), but parents (rightfully, I think) push their kids towards school because there's no other road to success in life, or at least there wasn't for the previous generations.

Ah, such is progress! It used to be that a high school diploma was all that was needed to get an entry level job in a profession, then you worked your way up. Now, you need a college degree to get in on the entry level, and you work your way to middle management. Getting a college degree just isn't that special anymore. You have to do it though; it's expected if you want a job outside the fast food or retail industry. And even in retail now, if you want to move up, it helps to have a college degree.

I choose to go to college because I cannot hope to learn Media Communication without the facilities and teachings from a school
