so I was at this forum for native American, and one of the host was telling
this funny story, which I didn't understand. Here is what he said:
The chief of an indigenous group in California was invited to the Vatican
to meet the pope. When he went there, he saw how beautiful the Vatican
and all the luxury that the pope live in. He was highly impressed. While
he was talking to the pope and looking around the Vatican, he notices a phone. He
asks the pope what he uses it for. The pope said that he use the phone as
a way to communicate with god. The chief as if he can use the phone to
talk to god, the pope said that sure, you can use it. When the chief was
on the phone for twenty minutes or so, the pope started getting worried,
because it was a long distance phone call since god live is pretty far
away.
After talking to god long distance, the chief apoglize to the pope. The
chief invited the pope to come and visit him whenever the pope is in California. Six
month later, the pope was on a tour and he stop in Santa Barbara, so the pope decided to go
visit the native chief. When the pope arrive, he saw that the chief live
in a small trailer. The pope was invited into the trailer while his bodyguards
waited outside because there wasn't enough room for them. The pope was a
little unquotable because the trailer wasn’t big like the Vatican and
there was children running around the small patch of lands. The pope was offering some food and drink,
and that was when the pope notices that here was a phone.
The pope asks if the chief use the phone to talk to god too. The chief
said yes, and he allows the pope to use the phone because the pope himself
hasn’t been talking to god on his long distance phone lately from the Vatican.
While on the phone, the pope notices that he had been talking to god for well
over an hour. he hang up and apogolize to the native chief, but the chief
told the pope not to worried about the phone bill because the call to god is
local.
What do you think this mean? People were laughing at the end, but I
didn't understand. Was it a joke or a story? why was it that when
the chief talk to god on the pope’s phone from the Vatican, it is long distance
but when the pope talk to god on the native chief’s phone from trailer it is
local. Shouldn’t they both be long distance, since god live pretty far
away? What do you think that meaning of this story?

Different thoughts on God. To the chief, his God is around him, closeby; while to the Pope, God is up in heaven and nigh unreachable. The Vatican tries to impress the far-off God with how large and pretty it is, while the Chief's God is much more personable. Is that it?

That's exactly it. His thoughts were that God is with the poor and those who are close to Mother Earth, not the worldly and overly religious.
