So I've been reading up on this Discovery Channel "Tomb of Jesus" and I was having a discussion with my friend about it. She seemed surprised at my comment that definitive proof Jesus' remains would take the rug out from under Christianity's feet. She was very surprised about this comment.
Is this not true? I mean, I've read the Bible twice and I know what Jesus said. He said that he would rise from the dead. If He didn't rise from the dead then He is a liar. So how can we believe anything else He said? He said that He was the Son of God and that His death AND resurrection would bring about the salvation of mankind. If there is definitive proof of Jesus' remains, that means that he didn't raise from the dead and ascend into Heaven.
Of course, the operative word in the previous sentence is of course "definitive." I personally don't know how they could prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that any remains they find are that of Jesus Chirst. But if that is somehow possible, wouldn't it basically be proving that Jesus is a liar? I mean, my friend replied with, "I wouldn't let some scientific discovery disprove my religion!"
.... Excuse me? I understand being a strong Christian and such, but you cannot deny the fact that science does hold some clout. Shouldn't religion be founded on reasonable belief and not just blind acceptance? I don't think they can really prove anything with the Jesus thing, but if they do it will definitely prove troublesome for the Christian faith.

I don't think it's completely correct to take the Bible literally. Metaphors were used all throughout the New Testament in Jesus's parables, so why should we expect the rest of it to be literal? Also, the text has been through two thousand years' worth of translation and copying, so surely there was somebody who wanted to change a detail here or there. What is most important is the underlying message of loving mankind and trying to live your best as God wants you to.
At the same time, I also don't agree with people who follow religion blindly and take no time to examine what it really means outside a basic understanding. You don't have to reject science because you're a Christian.
I wouldn't say that if this is Jesus's family tomb, that the rest of the bible is shot to hell (even though parts are suspect to my way of thinking). Let's face it, the bible was written by man. Man screws up. Man screws up a lot. Maybe that part was fudged like other parts of the bible (King James anyone?). Maybe it's not supposed to be taken literally.
The problem with the Bible, and I imagine this will ruffle feathers, is that people assume to know which parts to take literally and which not. The truth is, no one knows for sure what to take which way. So, people take this part literally and say that part isn't meant to be taken literally. Or that this part negates this other part. Ridiculous. No one knows folks.
And I suppose I should point out here that I'm not Christian or I will undoubtedly be privy to the "you call yourself Christian" commentary. Rather not go through all of that.

i am a christian and its not just about believing the bible or scientist. until those scientis positively prove that those are Jesus' remains then it will be a different story. for that matter, how are they going to prove that????? DNA? how? to be able to identify someone thru DNA there must be a known descendant of Jesus to compare HIS and his known descendant's DNA and if there is WHO is HE/SHE, i bet the whole world would want to know right!!!!!
