A start on Volunteer Work

Tagged:  •

I recently worked with MSC Fish (a student led organization based in A&M) on an HSSC (high school service conference) project in which we cleaned up a lot in the Bryan, Texas area for the benefit of the local residents. This lot is used by students going to and from school on foot and was recently deemed dangerous. This is where MSC Fish came in... they got together high school students from all over Texas and had us give the lot a "fixer upper". It turned out quite nicely and the children no longer walk through there in fear of sharp, broken objects or being mugged. My point?... That everyone can make a difference even if there's no Nobel Peace Prize to recompense you. Programs like the one MSC Fish runs help one get started in the world of volunteer work while learning at one's own pace. I have over 300 volunteer hours but decided to do this as a change of perspective and learned new things every waking moment i was there. If a local program like this helped a self proclaimed volunteer "vet" it could help you too. Search for ways to help in your community... it could come back and reward you in the most unexpected ways.
