If I Could Do It Over

If I could do my life over, I would change several things. Most of them are minor changes, but they would have had a lasting impact on the rest of my life, I feel...

-I would have stayed active in 4-H, especially in the horse shows. Why would I change this? Because it would have provided an opportunity for greater experience in the horse show world, provided opportunity for scholarships, and made me a more accomplished and knowledgeable Equestrian than I am currently.

-I would have kept up gymnastics for as long as I could as a hobby, in addition to dance. Why? Because it would have given me greater upper body strength, something that I constantly work toward. Also, I have always wanted to be able to do the tumbling that gymnasts can do...even the ones who were recreational and quit in high school or something. I think it would have prevented me from having to transfer schools as well.

-I would have started playing a sport or something in middle school. Preferably running, like track or cross country, but something like volleyball or softball would have been acceptable as well. In fact, I think it would've been more fun. Why? Because I hate running now, and it's a struggle to force myself to run.

-I would have worked for better test scores on the SAT and ACT than I worked for. Why? Because I would have learned how to study for standardized tests like the MCAT or GRE, which I am now facing.

-I would have, if I came to the school where I am now first (and not transferred), been a double-major in English and Neuroscience or Psychology with a Pre-Health emphasis.

This last bit is really the one I thought of when I started writing this entry. But, the others I have always thought about as well.

After two entries ago, it was commented that maybe I should change my major and perhaps it is not too late. I have given that some serious thought, not because of the comment, but because it is a growing trend of suggestions from people around me.

You see, I love to write. Mostly fiction, but I've dabbled in magazines and newspapers...mostly small ones, such as school publications or local publications. So, English is a natural choice for me...in fact, any major with an emphasis on critical thinking and writing is perfect for me. So why the hell did I pick Neuroscience?!

I have asked myself that question for the last two years. The first semester I transferred here, I received my highest GPA yet…and I took NO science classes at all. Funny, eh? Spring semester…my lowest GPA here yet. Totally ruined my GPA, and ability to join clubs and such on campus where that sort of thing matters. I took three science classes that semester and the three classes I had (yes, I took 22 credit hours last semester to try to catch up, which could’ve been part of the problem…) that were not science I received A’s/B’s in. This semester, I have all science-oriented classes…including Psychology classes. (Which, interesting fact, do not count toward a Science GPA…sucky). Only 18 hours total, including the Neuroscience research that I help with. I’m excited about that.

Anyways….why did I pick Neuroscience....

I love science, I am fascinated with learning about the brain and the processes, etc. It interests me a great deal, and it is a huge change of pace from the literary-oriented classes I would have had as an English major here at this school, I believe. Still, this would be my do-over college major path:

-I’d enter as a freshman English major in mid-level courses due to my high school credit, take all of my core classes that I could which includes the basic science courses I would need to take as a basis for pre-med.

-Spring, I’d declare a second major in Neuroscience (preferably) or Pre-Health. If I declare Neuroscience, I probably would not need a minor (it is one of three degrees on campus determined to be too rigorous for a minor) and if I declared Pre-Health I’d minor in Religion.

-I’d finish out my classes sophomore/junior year, until the English department declares me a candidate (due to my performance and amazing grades, of course ;-) hehe…) for the Masters program.

-At this point, I would be on the five-year plan, where upon graduation I would have….a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience (or Pre-Health, which adds the minor in Religion), and a MASTERS in Education.

How wicked-awesome would that have been? Yeah…pretty much amazing, I agree. (Oh, how I wish I had the ability to turn-back time…like Hermione from Harry Potter, the third novel...)

Of course, if I turned back time far enough…I would have changed more early-day stuff to stay at my previous school. Perhaps.

And, it is off my chest now, I cannot think of it any longer, as I must focus on studying for the four tests, a quiz, and a paper all happening/due this week. Yay.

Editing for format or deleting the older post? We're having a lot of issues with format lately. What works for me is to totally forego use of the rich text editor (disable rich text) and paste or write the post in the HTML editor with full html turned on. Even if you don't add html tags, it works. Well, for me at any rate.

To delete a post, go to the post, click on the edit tab (top of the post), scroll down to the bottom and click the delete button. Confirm the delete and viola!

Yes, I agree that I wish I could do things over because in my junior year in high school, I wish that I could of got a job if I knew ahead of time that my parents would eventually get a divorce and I would have to pay for my college tuition and books, myself.
