Ladies and gentelmen, our government has made another stupid move. U.S House of Rep passed the immigration control bill (H.R 4437). Acoording to righttruth.typepad.com, this bill targets illegal hiring, provide for a border fence, stop catch-and-release enforcement policy, mandate federal cooperation with state and local police in immigration-law enforcement, and end the visa lottery, among other measures. With that being said, millions of immigrants are going to affect by it.
I am one of them.
I'm a legal immigrant, living in U.S legally for about six years since I was 12. Although I live here with proper documentation, I don't understand why the U.S government is doing this to us, immigrants. Have we done anything wrong? Not only the bill causes problems to illegal immigrants but to legal ones as well. According to nilc.org, The Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 (H.R. 4437) would criminalize the status of millions of non-U.S. citizens. Legal immigrants like myself would be deported if I convicted of a minor crime. Illegal immgrants would be considered felons whether or not they commit a crime. Is this fair? No, I don't think so.
My family came to America for better quality of life and education. Our ultimate goal is to be U.S citizens. We know deeply that it is impossible to become one because of restricted laws since 9/11. However, we want to live here legally as long as we can. Plus, no one from my family has ever committed a serious crime. We are not dangerous. We are here to do our thing and never want to hurt anybody. I wondered why the house of representative see us, immigrants as a threat to national security. Let me tell you one thing, my family pays taxes like you Americans do, yet we are not eligible for any federal aid for college tuition, etc.
What else is the U.S government going to do to immigrants? Bill 4437 has created a huge reation to point where many people protest the bill. Let me ask the people in D.C, aren't you immigrants, too? Your great great great grandparent moved from somewhere to America. They did not born on the U.S soil like the Native Americans. Why are you doing this? I can understand about the border issue. It is a great idea to build a fence along U.S borders. But to limit the rights of all immigrants? It sounds shady to me.
Immigrants, regardless to their legal status, are vital to the economy. Think about it. If you work in restaurants, you would know this. Can a U.S citizen wash 100s of dishes a day? Can a U.S citizen work in hard labor? Without these illegal immigrants, who would do work that requires hard labor? who would do the jobs that Americans don't do? I live in NYC; I don't see any legal immigrant or U.S citizen works in a kitchen and wash sh*t load of dishes. Immigrants also have their own version of the American Dreams; that is to live in U.S freely without fear, and the ability to live their lives to the fullest potential.

This is simply not true. How can you be deported if you are here illegally? Why are so many in an uproar over this. Mexico has armed military on there borders. They will shoot illegal immigrants coming into there country. Were is the burning Mexico flags (like we saw in LA with the US flag) and protests by people in Mexico, who are illegal from south of there border.
Should we just open up the borders? If you are here illegally, you have committed a crime. This not an issue of hate. It is an issue of security. Our borders are a joke. You can simply walk across and start getting my tax money for social programs, county hospitals, schools etc. I don’t care what you say. If you are here illegal how does your employer deduct taxes? It also hurts and cheats the people that are waiting in line to come across legally like my family did. Come here legally and you will have no worries about this or any other bill.
In the 50s and 60s most of the jobs you are speaking of were done by legal US citizens. People in construction us to make over twenty dollars an hour. Inflation adjusted that would equal over $30 an hour currently. Why should a contractor pay a citizen $30 an hour when an illegal gets $10? Result… No more job for the middle class citizen! Immigration hurts the middle class and those who migrated legally. One who could get a decent wage is now in competition with a community of folks that will do the work for next to nothing.

That would cost so much money. And even if it was free, do you really think that a good solution is to shoot people who are trying to come here illegally?

I'd like to add to your point contradicting the common idea "immigrants doing jobs that Americans don't want." Such an idea is completely incorrect. Many Americans live below the poverty line and their situation is worsening with the lack of labor laws to keep up with inflation. Minimum wage hasn't changed in decades. But I could actually see the flaw in that argument when I saw a documentary on young homeless homosexual teens who work as prostitutes in downtown L.A. These teens and young adults are almost 100% guaranteed to contract an STD and most of them don't live past 30. There are hundreds of them in L.A. and more in other large cities. I'm sure any one of them would choose a janitorial, or gardening, or farming position over the sad, degrading prostitution they must subject themselves to to survive. They can't be the only demographic of desperate jobseekers. There's a good number of Americans I'm willing to bet that could fill these jobs and probably for not much more than the illegal immigrants are paid.
Also no one has brought up the number of illegal immigrants who have commited crimes before they came here. And what a perfect haven to thrive in there's no documentation on them so accountability for past and future crimes is impossible to impose on these people because we don't know where they work or live. Not all illegal immigrants are criminals (excluding the fact that coming into this country ILLEGALLY is a crime) but many are drugtrafficers and sex offenders. This is who you think we should allow into are country? Are we really wrong for wanting to make sure these people don't get in?

(1) American citizenship should not come cheaply. Until about 30 years ago it would normally take about 6 or 7 years to obtain after getting the green card.
When you have two political parties (1) looking for votes, (2) the other looking for cheap labor, they both tend to overlook existing laws.
The solution is simple
(1) Allow local law enforcement to reenter the immigrant enforcement laws.
(2) Re-Inforce the border with more agents coupled with new type of equipment,
Primarily it is up to us the voter by voting in the person who represents Americam not the Rpublican or Denocrat Party

We have a new wave in this country & it's called hispanic crime. we have our own nuts in this country and we certainly don't need more. We have hispanics driving around without driver license & insurance. Two of my relatives have been hit by hispanics with the later. We have a hispanic apartment complex in the town next to mine where the police have a permanent base in the complex because of the gang crime. To suggest we should empty africa, mexico,india and other countrys and bring them here is ludicrous. My parents were imagrent who came here legally and I expect no different from any nationality. Many good points made here. The key to stopping illegal immigration is to stop the incentives for coming and the demand for the labor.
The Senate will take up the House bill Tuesday but that bill does not have the proper procedures – on purpose in my opinion.
The first step is to make illegal immigration a crime that is enforced and carries harsher penalties. Second is to levy and enforce stiff fines against the employers for hiring illegal labor. If they faced a $10,000 fine per violation, and the law was enforced by sharing the revenue with the state and local agencies that enforced it, the economic incentive would be reversed. Over time the number of illegals would be whittled down.
I believe the controlled guest worker program would be renewed and wages would go up, attracting those Americans who wouldn’t take the jobs before because the wages were too low and the guest workers would feel a part of the country rather than being outlaws.

It might seem unfair, but I'd like to tell a story that may help to enlighten you on this subject. In my freshman year of highschool my counselor wanted to accelerate my learning and place me in a higher science class. I was doing fine in the class with a C+ to B- or so I thought until my teacher called my parents and deigned that we have a meeting about my status. She said that since I was in allowed classes that were above my grade level I should be performing better in them at least getting a high high B to low A. At the time it felt like the most unfair thing in the world--here I was passing this class and she wanted to kick me out. Looking back I realize that since I was given the privelage and honor of being in a place that I wouldn't ordinarily be in I should prove at all times that I deserve to be in that class. Of course the other kids who were all a year older than me could go on with as low of a C as they wanted but I had to be better than that.
As an immigrant (and I speak of the only kind there is the legal ones) those who come to America must prove their worth. It may seem unfair, but becoming a U.S. citizen is a privelage NOT A RIGHT and just as I had to perform at an above average rate in my Biology class so must immigrants as citizens. It makes sense and if you can't be grateful for the opportunity you should just go back as harsh as it may sound.

Did you just use "we should be nice" in your arguement? It's not about being nice, it's about having solid, unbreachable, secure borders. It's about rights, not "humanity". It's about lowering the cost of my daughter's hospital bill, since I not only have to pay for HER medical operations, but for that of an some illegal immigrant mother who can't keep her legs closed. Regarding the rights of illegal aliens, note the last line of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution:
Section 1.
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Note that the phrase in bold does not state "citizen" like the previous sentence. It states any person, whether here legally or illegally. Remember that, furthermore, any child born to an illegal immigrant is automatically a citizen of the US, as is stated in the first line.
However, I agree that people found to have entered the US illegally should have every expectation of being deported.
One other thing. When I hear that illegal immigrants "pay taxes like the rest of us," does that mean they pay income taxes, or simply the usual sales taxes? If they are in fact paying income taxes, how in the world did they obtain a Social Security Number?
Funny also how these people defending illegal immigrants act like 100 percent of them are good people hard workers. You forget to mention those funneling money back home away from our economy, and commiting crimes, rising healthcare costs, running drugs and shipping them here. Illegals pay taxes of all kinds. Of cours this doesn't apply accross the board, but the few that I know do have money removed from their paychecks which then go to the government. Of course this requires a social security number, which means they are falsifying them in some way. And yes, that is wrong, but if the question is whether or not they pay income tax, then the answer is yes. A fair number, due to falsified social security numbers do actually end up paying taxes like the rest of us.

California hosts America's largest population of illegal immigrants, California bears a huge cost to provide basic human services for this fast growing, low-income segment of its population. A new study from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) examines the costs of education, health care and incarceration of illegal aliens, and concludes that the costs to Californians is $10.5 billion per year. California's "Cheap Labor" costs average household $1,183 a year, if you're a tax-payer, that includes you. Also, is it a coincidence that California, an affluent state long ago, now has the worst state budget deficit, is it a coincidence that it also has the largest (estimated) number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. Will it suprise you if I told you that I personally know of people that have brought their parents from other countries, made them citizens and now they are collecting a Social Security check without having ever contributed one cent to the system? Or that I know of at least one person that came to this country illegaly, were granted amnesty, never worked a day in her life but was able to prove that she had some kind of depression that did not permit her to work, now she collects a disability check and works for cash in several different places? or what about the statement many people make "well, they are just taking the jobs nobody else wants" BULL! Do you know how many illegal immigrants are working at Walmart, Target, Kmart, restaurants, auto repair shops, and many other places with false documentation, such as either fake social security numbers or stolen social security numbers? My son who is still in school but wants a job has even applied for jobs bussing tables but he cannot get a job in part because of all the illegals and all the immigrants comming into this country. What a suprise that it is being projected that there won't be enough money for the young folks that are contributing to the system now.

I am not defending illegal immigration. I am simply pointing out the fact that the Constitution of the United States of America grants equal protection under the law to all people within its borders, whether they are here legally or not. This has been repeatedly reinforced by the US Supreme Court. Even the conservative judges on the court agree with this interpretation.
Many senators and representatives have recently tried to twist the phrase "within its jurisdiction" on purpose to mean than Congress has the right to define this Amendment to the Constitution, thus giving them the the power to determine civil rights. Congress does not have this power. You forget that Congress is only one-third of the government. The Judiciary and the Executive branches are equal participants in this country's governance. It is an elaborate system of checks and balances. That is why we have three branches of government, not one.
Do not be fooled by inflammatory and stupid websites that claim the clause "within its jurisdiction" means that this civil right does not apply to all human beings that reside on US soil. The Supreme Court has never agreed with that interpretation of this phrase. The US Constitution is a document that grants freedoms to all human beings, not just its own citizens!
This is an example of the remarkable distinction of the United States' Constitution in human history. It is the greatest experiment in Democracy that humankind has ever witnessed. If you want to challenge 200 years of freedoms, by all means do so. But realize that if the US ever shrinks from its role as a beacon of freedom, then the US will not deserve to last as a world power.

Oh, and just to reiterate my position... The Supreme Court has determined that the only exceptions to the provisions of the 14th Amendment are these:
* Children born to foreign diplomats.
* Children born to enemy forces in hostile occupation of the United States.
* Native Americans born on tribal lands.
There is no easy solution to this problem. However, just to be fair with everyone and still protect the power of law we should consider following
1) secure border and any one who enters illegal should be punished how............i don't know
2) those who are here illegally should be grated lawful resident however; they can never become citizen, or call family members and should not be entitled any benefits..... that what you get for illegal entry
3) After that punish those who harbor and employ illegal immigrat
