In the wake of the massacre at Virginia Tech, people are going crazy, calling in bomb threats everywhere. What's with that? My brother goes to Merritt Island High School. This is the third day in a row that there has been a bomb threat at the school, and the fourth time this year. There was a bomb threat Wal-mart in Cocoa yesterday. I have heard that there was also a bomb threat at a school in Rockledge. There have been bomb threats in at least 7 central Florida schools this week.
As far as the disaster at VA Tech goes, I think more could have been to prevent it? Should psychological evaluations be required to attend college? At what point does prevention invade the rights and privacy of the students? What should your college/all colleges and universities do to prevent this kind of thing from happening again?
I think psych. evaluations would be a good idea in theory. If they were required though, I think a provision should be made through the schools for free evaluations. I would say that if a threat to self or others is determined, then students should not be allowed to attend classes untill the threat is resolved, however that compromises the right to education for
almost anyone with a mental health proplem.
On the downside, that would cost the schools more money and may not guarantee the quality of the evaluations.
Please post a comment and let me know what you think about what happened at VA Tech and people doing things just because of what happened. Do you think that the disaster at VA Tech could have been prevented? How?

He was put in a mental institution not too long ago under an order of some state law. They let him go for outpaitent treatment because (for some reason) they didn't see signs of impaired judgement. Now keeping im ther could have prevented that particular situation but that brings up a whole other set of problems.

Exactly! I have been thinking about that...about what kind of preventative action could be taken that would be ethical. That's why I typed out this blog. I wanted to see what other people were thinking as well! Thanks for commenting!

I don't think it does any good for us to question if the massacre at Tech could have been prevented... but only pray for those that it has affected (and believe me my high school in VA was affected quite a bit)... and take this as a lesson and try to figure out ways to prevent future acts... if that is even possiblity... because truth be told how many people do we know that have some sort of mental problem??? who takes depression medication??? who is ADHD??? quite a few... so instead of dwelling on the questions we have how about we concentrate on the one thing we know: People lost their lives and deserved to be HONORED

The only reason I ask if it could have been prevented and how, is because I want to see what kind of ideas people have to prevent a similar event from happening. How do we learn from this. Like i said, psych evals compromise the rights of anyone w/ any mental problem. And, frankly, I don't want to see that happen. Theoretically, it would prevent future problems, but yes it would infringe on EVERYONE'S rights, even those who do not have any mental problems, including my own. ~pyrochica
A psych eval for college admission? I think not.
I'm pretty sure that a lot of people would be deemed a "threat" by a generalized, forced evaluation by a psychologist who sits around all say and evaluates 19-25 year olds for college admission purposes only. We all have our ticks and problems, and I'll be damned if I'm putting them on display just to get a degree.
It's a problem, but not a common enough occurance that I think that every college student should be evaluated before attending classes.

"So stuff that in your pipe and smoke it!"
right...i said it would be a good idea "in theory," but it does bring up another laundry list of issues.~pyrochica
Actually, I started writing this post because of all the things that have been happening "in the wake" of this tragedy. (mostly the bomb threats) ~pyrochica
