My sister was watching The Sentinel while I was on the computer earlier today. I wasn't really paying attention to the movie until the "President" said something along the lines of "We should ratify the Kyoto Protocol." Obviously, this is Hollywood talking. But I agree with this statement.
So, we signed the Kyoto Protocol but we won't ratify them? I realize it's a little late now, considering that the first commitment period starts next week. But why won't we? President Bush basically said we won't sign it because China is exempt from cutting down on there greenhouse gas emissions. Of course, I think China and India should be required to cut down on emissions, but I still think the Protocol is worth ratifying.
I have lots of opinions on this issue. For one thing, I didn't think that climate change was a problem until a few months ago when I started researching it. On top of that, I've done a project on the Kyoto Protocol. I actually went through and read the crazy resolution, got utterly confused, and used Wikipedia to make sense of it. I agree with the Protocol for the most part (I agree with President Bush that China and India should not be exempt but can kind of see the reasoning for leaving at least China out). I also have heard that the US wants to make their own Protocol because the Kyoto left stuff out. Which, of course it did because it's a resolution for the whole freaking world. Stuff's going to get left out, people.
My point. The US should have ratified the Kyoto Protocol. We can make our own but very few states will ratify it. And the Kyoto Protocol should have been written in a much easier format or they should make a "Kyoto Protocol for Dummies."
