Funding or lack thereof

If you attend a private college or university, you should know by now that you don't get as much financial assistance from the government as public colleges and universities do. If you attend a private college or university in Georgia and are a Georgia resident, you don't get as much HOPE funding as public schools; you don't get the $100 for books! If you attend a private school you also know and fell the extra thousands you are paying for your education because your school doesn't get enough government financial assistance. Your school has to make up for that lack of funding by charging you more for your top notch education. The pros of going to a private college or university are smaller class sizes, more one on one time from your professors, and more of a sense of community as opposed to just being another number.
Why do private colleges and universities get less funding than the public ones? Do you believe that this is right or wrong and why? Also does anybody know any good articles that explain these points?
Although I have focused on these trends in colleges and universities, you can also find very similar and like trends when you compare public and private elementary, middle, and high schools.
