I am quite sure some college students or soon to be college students have heard of that term, if not, "freshman 15" is the fifteen pounds that some students gain during their first year in college. We all know the obvious reason for why this happens. College students are basically thrown into a "different world." That is, if we no longer live at home. If we live on campus, we are exposed to so many types of foods, and we can eat all the junk food that we want without getting restrictions from our parents. We can eat any time we want, sleep any time, go to class if we so choose, get put on soo much stress from each class and of course, who can forget how much fun you can have in high school. Lets also not forget the opportunity of getting exposed to alcohol. As much as many students wont admit it, we are exposed to alcohol in college, whether we like it or not. What many students don't realize however, is that partying too much could and will result in gaining weight. As a second year in college, I have learned a lot, and I do admit it, I did gain the freshman 15 due to the drastic lifestyle change. Advise to those who are entering college: Watch what you eat/drink, as much as you have the freedom to eat anything, eat in moderation. Those who do not have a fast metabolism may have a really hard time losing those 15 pounds off. So be careful =D You can be self conscious, be responsible, and have fun at the same time while in college.... its all about setting priorities =)

I would have thought we lost 15 instead of gained because of the change. I believed people would actually lose weight because they are in a new environment and that they might be under pressure.

I don't know how people gain so much weight with all the walking around campus. And I only eat when the cafe's open. I only eat at fast food places on the weekend when I don't feel like going to the cafe or if I miss it.

I lost probably 5 pounds throughout my freshman year. This included eating the high fat content of dorm foods. Then again, I had to practically hike up to my classes everyday, because we're on the side of a nice big bluff. And believe me, my transition to college was drastic. My mom got deployed to Kuwait, my sisters were living with their dad, my boyfriend was halfway across the country, and I didn't get to see him once, and I had to share a room with someone I probably wouldn't have ever met otherwise. The academic part of it wasn't so hard, though. That came this year.

It's only been a few months since I went to housing at a U and I gained about 3 to 4 lbs... good for me since I'm underweight. Most of it comes from mostly eating a lot at lunch at the buffet setting we have at our dining commons. Some of us eat as much as we can, but don't realise that eating too much in one sitting isn't that great of an idea, LOL.
