Avoiding the Freshman 15

Tagged:  •

So, I'm sure that everyone that is in college or is going to college has heard about or experienced the dreaded freshman 15.  Well, I'm not trying to brag, but since I've been in college, I have actually lost 5 pounds and I was wondering if it was just me or if other people go off to college and lose weight too.  I personally attribute my weight loss, which I really wouldn't consider healthy because I'm pretty lean to start with, with severe stress from classes.  I don't know about your college/ high school but mine sort of expects you to be a superhuman taking on over 15 credits plus extramural research projects.  Some people can handle that but the stress has gotten to me because I have no appetite.

If you all are adjusting to college better and the freshman 15 might be looming over you, here's a few tips that my friends have used that really help.  First of all, they walk to all their classes.  They say it gets them up a little earlier, they get the exercise, it suppresses their appetites and they also feel more awake.  Also I found in my college that when you go to events, there's always free food.  Unfortunately free food doesn't mean free calories.  Finally, even though the dining hall is all you can eat, I'd try to limit myself.

So if your having stress issues like me where the stress consumes whatever you eat than I guess you don't have to worry about the dreaded freshman 15, but if you've found a way to navigate through college yet some extra pounds have latched on, I hope my recommendations can help.

Luckily for your waistline, most colleges won't offer the dilemma of whether to walk to class or drive. Limited parking is an issue at almost every university.
