homeless and hopeless

Whats you personal opinion on the homeless?

do you feel sorry for them? and how do you think that they got there?

In my psychology class we started to talk about homeless people and there were some really strong opinions over this topic. With roughly 50% or americans are homeless or have been homeless, how great can america be? sure we are cleaner than places like India but we really do have a lot of our own problems, heck we can't even control the nation of iraq let alone immigration in our own country. let alone being able to control out homeless population in out cities. there are even some cities that are kicking homeless people out of parks and out of the city in general. but there are so many homeless people in America that its hard to believe that we rather push them around rather than help them. though many of them either have a drug or drinking problem. some of them really need help, not mental though, like they were on med. wage and then they got really ill and had medical bills and such and lost everything. yet there are so many that are faking it and just ruining the chances of true homeless people getting help.

Yes, I believe it is a big issue and we should help them out. I just wonder sometimes about the people who sit on a corner and ask for money, when they could be using that valuable time to look for a job. I understand maybe they need some money to get some decent clothes for an interview, but all too often, they don't even want to work which probably stems from depression. I actually think therapy might help a lot of those people. Obviously some pretty horrible events happened in their lives to get them to that point, and just having some therapy and someone to talk to might help them be able to emotionally get back up on their feet.

Many of them have horrible addictions and while I will give them food, their pride sometimes stands in the way, or else they want cigarettes, alcohol, or money for harder drugs. I am not willing to fund their addictions and plunge them closer to death, in some cases...I sometimes wonder where their families are...Around here some Vietnam vets have opted the homeless life.

33% of homeless people have addictions, 25% have mental illness, and 33% are entire families living on the streets. Like sodamnbeautiful said, therapy would probably help a lot of them.

I think the biggest hurdle many homeless people have to get over is very low self-esteem...I was also homeless at one point in my life, and i know that was a big part of my problem. When I talk to the women and men that I work with, one thing shines through for most of them...they don't feel like they are worth much or anything. It is very hard to take care of yourself, get a job, even have good hygene if you don't feel worth anything. I know I am still struggling with this feeling myself; I am finally getting some therapy which I think will help in the long run, but I often wonder "do I really deserve to be fed and sheltered and clothed today?" I especially feel this way in the face of all the suffering I often see. I wonder why I deserve what I have when so many do not. But I'm starting to come to the understanding that my being clean and fed and housed actually lifts the spirits of those I work with and makes them feel like "well if she has all of that, maybe I can too one day..." I try to let them know where I came from and that if I can rise out of homelessness, addictions and joblessness, then they can too.

Carrot
