Diets

My dad just recently introduced me to a book written by Michael Pollan. The book in question is called In Defense of Food. It talks about how when we focus on nutrition, dieting and eating healthier based on the labels on food packages, we are actually contributing to our own eventual obesity. Even though I haven't finished the book yet, the synopses got my mind reeling.
By just being a teenager, I realize that every other food that is going through my mouth is complete junk. Chips, soda, french fries, etc. breaking these foods down to their chemical substances are not what my body needs. Ask anyone walking down the streets and they will agree that Americans and heading towards obesity. In my opinion, most of those people who are in that statistics are on a diet right now.
Looking around I see friends who only order salads when we go out to eat, which makes me feel even more like a cow, especially when I order and entree AND an appetizer. And as the grass eater pours the dressing onto the salad they say (to themselves) "I'm on a diet, and eating a salad helps". IT DOES! if they stop slathering it with dressing! I mean, whats the point of ordering a salad to be healthy when you dump a ton of dressing on top? Ranch dressing, a popular, well-liked, appreciated salad dressing and also commonly used as a dipping sause, is made out of buttercream, milk, and mayonnaise amoungst other seasonings. Loading ranch dressing on a salad is not going to help your diet.
I guess what i'm trying to say is that the author of this book, journalist Michael Pollan is right. Labels aren't always promoting the truth. More importantly in my opinion, is to be healthy. My advise to myself, eat, don't starve yourself, be full and merry, but don't over do it and to make sure to go to the gym!

I recently reviewed a documentary on this sort of thing. I just went shopping today and got baby greens (which I'll spritz with a vinaigrette just enough to get some flavor on them), granola (which I'm going to start making myself, probably), yogurt, and some veggies to make things like chili and stirfry and stuff, plus some TV dinners, merely because I haven't gotten into the habit of cooking enough food to bring with me to work when I go.
