Mom Hides Huffing Cans

How many parents would do the exact same thing?  I personally know a few kids’ parents who have covered up for them.   Both of them crashed their car in a ditch while drunk and called their parent.  The parents came and picked them up, brought them home, and then told the cops they (the parent) were driving the car.   In this particular case, the mother is now facing felony charges.  Her daughter was huffing while driving and crashed her Camry into a truck and then a tree.  The mother came to the scene of the accident and took the aerosol cans out of the car.  The girl was said to be huffing compressed air that’s used to clean computer keyboards.  Two of her passengers had life-threatening injuries.  One of the passengers lost sight in one of her eyes.  Another passenger in the car, with minimal injuries, said they were all huffing.

Parents have a responsibility to take care of their children and some would argue that includes covering for them.  They believe that it can be taken care of at home and they don’t want their child to go to jail.  No one wants to see their kid in jail, but some parents believe in that tough love.  They argue that a lesson can’t be learned unless there are consequences outside of the home.   No matter how severe the consequence at home, the kid will always think their parents will bail them out.

To cover for the kid could mean repeated behavior, or worse, they could kill someone next time.  To not cover for them means a possible criminal record (many times, even if it is a juvenile, incidents involving a car mean being charged as an adult).  That can follow them the rest of their life.  So I ask, what would your parents do?  Better yet, what would you do if it was your child?

Honestly, I don't know what I would do because I don't have a child yet. I highly doubt I'm strong enough to see my daughter or son get arrested. But if it's serious, I'll probably have to choice but let justice speaks for itself. I understand parents trying to protect their children. I admire that very much as long as they're not blind to the crimes their children commit.

By the way, do you have an article for this? I'm just curious. Maybe I'll read more of it.
