Cloning a go in Austrailia

Australia's Senate narrowly voted to lift the ban on cloning embryos for stem cell research today.  The vote was very narrow being approved 34-32.  This bill would give scientist the opening they need to do embryo cloning for stem cell researchin hope to cure fatal diseases.  It is not a law just yet, but the biggest battle has been won to get the project rolling.

Embryotic cloning is a very sensitive matter and the political authorities in Australia has taken many procautions in keeping this a strict medical advancement.  Some opponents feel that embryotic cloning could create animal-human hybrids.  Australia has been able to work with stem cell research since 2002, but this is the first of them being able to create their source for stem cell research.  Should this bill pass- all cloned embryos will have to be destroyed after 14 days and in no way can be implanted into a woman to give birth to.  They have also made it a crime to abuse the embryotic cloning and someone who does could spent 10 to 15 years in prison.

So, what are your thoughts on this?   Is America falling behind in Science and Technology?  Is it wrong to say it is wrong to conduct stem cell research?  Galileo pointed out that maybe God gave certain men the power of knowledge to discover more than just what the bible says?  I am writing in a bias manner in hopes of not persuading you for or against this- I would be interested in hearing the opinions of others.

America is falling behind... And that is tragic, considering that we like to rely on superior technology and freedom to stay the world's super power. Aside from that, I think stem cell research is a good thing.
The embrios/zygotes that are used to create lines for stem cell research are going to be aborted before they reach fetal stage anyway... And you wanna know why? Because when doctors are artificially insiminating eggs they do large sets, to make sure that the coupld ho wants a child GETS a child... But evenif the couple wants a child or two they do not want all ten of the embrios that develope. Why not put the waste to a good use? I mean honestly, you aren't saving a life. And it is not contrary to anti-abortion veiws.
Cloning people, however, should probably be left until scientists can get kittens right.
