What do you think of this fast increasing use of socializing online, do you think it will soon replace many forms of direct interaction among younger people or just another outlet for expression? People have embraced the idea of sharing their thoughts online away from restrictions, judgment, and interference. Teenagers especially are gravitating to the social network creating their own levels of hierarchy through video uploads, photos sharing, number of "friends,"and creativity of their personal webpage.

According to asurvey done by the Pew Internet & American Life Project stated that "content creation" is a growing source of how young adults (specifically teens girls) communicate with one another. "The survey found that content creation is not just about sharing creative output; it is also about participating in conversations fueled by that content. "

"Social media is an umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and "building" of shared meaning, as people share their stories, and understandings."

"However, many teen content creators do not simply plaster their creative endeavors on the Web for anyone to view; many teens limit access to content that they share.
There is a subset of teens who are super-communicators -- teens who have a host of technology options for dealing with family and friends, including traditional landline phones, cell phones, texting, social network sites, instant messaging, and email."

"Almost two-thirds of online teens have created something online, whether it's a personal Web page or a remixed video, according to a study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Sites such as Facebook and MySpace have opened the doors, giving them many of the necessary tools."
"Indeed, teens, more so than adults, restrict access to their personal photos and videos online, the report said. For instance, 39 percent of teenagers, compared with 34 percent of adults, said they limit access to their photos most of the time and 38 percent, compared with 24 percent, said they restrict access sometimes.
More than half of teenagers online have created a profile on a social networking site such as Facebook or MySpace. "

Communications patterns for teens are shifting to "multi-channel teens – those teens who use the internet, instant messaging, text messaging, cell phone, and social networking sites." And, compared to adults, teens are least likely to use email as a means of communicating, opting instead for texting, IM, and social networks to keep in touch with friends.

This data validates what we've all been seeing which is the growing popularity and demand for Web 2.0 phenomena such as user-generated content in the form of blogs, photos, and videos, and for social networking communities.
