Tied to the family

Its my junior year in high school, and everywhere I turn the thought of prospective colleges is looming over me. The pressure is ON. Worries arise about applications, where to enter, and the am I good enough question. Sound familiar?

I ask my friends where they are planning to apply to for college and almost all seem eager to go to a college far from home. Maybe they just want a change of scenery, or they want a taste of dorm room life. I have nothing against moving into a dorm the first year out of high school, I mean, it is exciting after all! But my problem is this: my family is super close and I also play a major role in the upkeep of our sanity- leaving would totally disrupt the balance of things. Another major issue is money. College tuition is already through the roof, and living in a dorm would just send my bank account to the grave (this is even more detrimental to a teenager with no steady income other than the occasional summer job). I'm sure there are many in the same situation.

Well then, why not attend a college close to home and stay living at home? This might be a justifiable solution to some, but not everyone has the luxury of living near a college, much less one they wish to attend.
Either way, go to college and you'll get an education no matter where you go. I just know that its also important to keep your family close, whether by correspondence and visits, or by living at home.

Anyway, this has been on my mind for a while now so I had to put it out there.
What do you think? Do the benefits of leaving home for the first year of college outweigh the negatives?

I'm living several thousand miles away from home. I'm in Israel and I'm studying in Washington - about as far away from home as it's possible to be. I didn't choose to go here specifically because it's so far, but I did always want to go to America to study.

Personally I LOVE being independant. I miss my family sometimes but I think there'd be so much negative consequences from living near them and going to college.

(it's outweigh, btw, not out-way)
