So I read Redneck hunter's blog about animal rights activists and it made me think of some activist I knew from Canaan Valley. They were awesome people, and of course many thought they were a bit.."off". Anyway, I forgot about a very interesting conversation I had with them one night-that is until I read redneck's blog. Let me share with you.
They were telling me about how it makes them so angry that people feed the deer that hang out in the state parks. They explained to me how this cripples the deer and makes them less likely to survive in the wild. The activist are so upset that these people that feed the animals don't realize how they are hurting these poor animals. Between sips of merlot, I say, "yes, I see" and "wow, never thought of it that way". After a while I could see their clear case for the poor deer.
So, they finally enlighten me of the plan they had to save these poor animals. What they have been doing was to pull up like tourist and hold out their hands to the deer as if they had food. In reality they did not have food in their hand, instead they'd punch the deer in the face. I practically spit my wine out when they told me they do this. I asked why they did and they said it would make the deer scared to approach a human with their hand out with food.
So, does this only appear to be strange to me or do you think it's as cruel to punch the deer in the face as it is to feed them?

I definitely agree that it is cruel to punch deer in the face. Maybe they could change their plan some. Perhaps they could play a loud noise to frighten the deer rather than hit it.
Some people are very interesting...Lol...Ummm that's a very interesting way to help a creature out.
I guess if I see a fellow human being eating something that I consider bad for them, I'll punch them in the face, and see how that goes.
Generally speaking, I understand the concept...but that's a very strange way to deal with the problem. How about putting up a sign that says "don't feed the deer." Or having a campaign with flyers and such telling people how it harms them. Or pretty much anything else...poor deer...:'(
Punching a deer in the face is quite odd if they are trying to help animals. I see their viewpoint but if they love and need to protect animals so much then how could they punch a deer? I love animals, although I'm not a extreme activist or anthing, I could never punch a deer in the face. I think there are other methods to spread awareness then to punch deer in the face.
I mean, what if you injure the deer's face?
At this very moment, somewhere a committee is deciding your life, only you weren't invited
Apparently they think it's better than letting them eat from a human's hand?
Well, that seems like a way to get the deer to stop eating out of people's hands I suppose. It is most definitely NOT the way I would go about it. I can understand the point that they're try to make but... I don't hurting the poor creatures is the best way to aid them.

Thanks for the comments....I'm actually giggling right now! The more I read it the funnier it gets...KTM I love how you compare it to a human eating something bad for them...LOL!!
Peace n Bike Grease~Sara
I do try. :-D
They say they don't want to hurt the animals yet they punch them that is a bit weird.
Feeding the animals does hurt them I see the point in what they are doing but it is weird
Isn't there another way
Yeah, that is a bit extreme, but the principle of the argument rings true. When someone sees "Bambi" come into their yard, they usually go "aww" or let the animal go about its business, when really they should run out into the yard screaming. Deer are accustomed to people because we've created perfect habitat for them (nice green grass year round) and haven't done much of anything to ward them off. Deer contraceptives (administered via injection) don't seem to be helping the population, and no one wants the state or local governments to trim down the deer numbers because that's cruel, so the animals are left to suffer potential starvation, chronic wasting disease, death by auto, etc. People created the problem, and I think we should be a part of controlling the population, but it seems that reducing the deer population is too unpopular at the moment.
