Some say scholarships are for the highly successful students who worked their ways up. Others say that it is for minority students who have the financial needs to pursue their goals in school. But what is this that I hear about the scholarship given out each year to the illegal immigrants?
The University that I go to is in one of the western states, and I think it is safe to say that it is very close to the border with our southern neighbor country, Mexico. As a matter of fact, we have ever increasing populatino of hispanics, legal or illegal. I hold nothing against the 'people.' However, there is this one issue that bothers me the most, and that is the scholarships that are given to illegal students.
Many students seeking secondary education hope to get a scholarship, either full or partial, to help cut down their cost for education. I agree that it should be an opportunity and hope open to everyone. Prior to Sep 11 incident, the US government seem to not discriminate scholarship reciepients base on nationalities. However, after the 9-11, the policy changed and the scholarship became a previlege narrowed down for mostly US citizens and residents. For international students it is a disasterous news, because this means they would be paying much more expensive tuition, without the gaurantee of getting any scholarship, even the partial ones. Although some of them are highly successful in academics and as deserving as other students, their nationality blocks them from recieving scholarship that they deserve to get. On the other hand, illegal students are recieving scholarships for no appearant reasons. To me, this seems absurd and ridiculously unfair. International students, although they are not citizens of the country, came here legally are residing here legally, and yet they don't get the chance to recieve any form of scholarship in form. They come here, expecting to learn something valuabe, both academically and culturally, and yet what they get instead is the feeling that they somehow got robbed. What would you fee like, if you pay the tuition of over $9000 a semester, with no compensation whatsoever, and yet you learn later on that students who came here and live here illegally are reicieving over $1000 scholarship? There is really something wrong here. Any thoughts on that, people?

I don't like the fact that illegal people are getting scholarships, or in college period. It should be an opportunity that is limited to legal residents. There are many scholarships for international students, but most are only for citizens because they are funded by taxpayers. Since citizens and permanent residents have been contributing to these funds for a long time, I think it is only fair for them to have the first preference.

I think there are scholarships out there for everyone. If you're more than one ethnicity, you can apply for both a lot of the time. I don't have a problem with them only being marketed towards certain groups because I think that if a group wants to give a gift to someone else, they should be able to pick who receives that gift.

Certain people are considered minority....ie skin color. There are not enough scholarships for online students. We need a better system.

There are a lot of scholarships out there, and I have yet to see any that exclude online students. You should qualify for the same scholarships as long as you meet their criteria for selection.
