Leonid Meteor Shower

The Leonid Meteor Shower returns!

These meteors travel along the orbit of the periodic comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. Whenever the comet passes through the inner solar system, there is a chance for a Leonid Meteor Shower to light up in the night sky.  The last time the comet passed through the inner solar system and toward the Sun was in 1998, and the most recent Leonid showers occurred in 2001 and 2002.

This weekend, when the Leonids should be at their peak (in #), we normally would expect to see only 10 meteors or less per hour.  The time of this year's Leonid showers is projected to occur for Nov. 19 at 4:45 GMT — 11:45 p.m. EST on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Oh! That's really cool! I'm sad that I've been away from the news and that I missed it... and I'm sad that one of my professors didn't mention it, but I suppose it's been too cloudy to open up the observatory to see... but cool!
