MySpace and Illegal Activity

MySpace. Almost everyone knows what it is and many people have one. It allows you to post pictures, information about yourself and even have your own blog. While sometimes used responsibly, there are tons of kids who do stupid things that can negatively affect them later on.

A few weeks ago, the Akron Beacon Journal ran an article about MySpace on the front page. It discussed the negative aspects of the site and pointed out the illegal activity that was blatantly posted all over the sites of high schoolers. There were descriptions of pictures of alcohol being cosumed, drugs being used, and sexual inappropriatness.

A couple months ago, in my town, a parent created a MySpace, went on it, and printed the pictures of illegal activity that kids had posted. They then proceded to send the pictures to parents so they could see what their children were doing.

This is where I get to my point. What were those kids thinking?!?! Actually participating in the activies is not what I'm talking about, although it is questionable. I'm talking about posting pictures of it online, where anyone could see them! These profiles were not set to private so only friends could view the pictures, they were out in the open for anyone to see.

I like to think that our generation is a bit more savvy technologically but this is just stupidity. If you take part in these activities (bad), and then decide to post the pictures online (stupid), you could at least set your profile to private so not everyone sees it (the only smart thing out of this list).

Using MySpace is by no means a bad thing but do so responsibly! I doubt you want everyone to know what illegal stuff you took part in over the last weekend.
