War Vs. Education

Tagged:  •

This past week in my economic class, we have been learning about how much money is put into the military for war. It is outrageous!!! Because of all the money that is put into the military, we dont get much for education! I mean, i do support our troops, but not all that money is needed to go into the military for war. For example, China only uses about 7 million dollars for military, and we on the other hand use over 400 million...China uses the rest of their money for education, they rather want people to further in education, than become soldiers, just to die. I learned that instead of all that money being spent in the military, high school seniors, well at least 220,000 high school seniors could have gotten full ride scholarships to the college of their choice. FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIPS!!!! Can you believe that??? But no! high school seniors have to fight for scholarships to get SOME money for college...Why is so much money spent on military??? Some should be spent on it, but not that much...Wouldn't it be better to have more educated students??? That way there could be better jobs and we wouldn't have to worry on the drop out rate of students...Its outrageous the money spent for military...more schools could have been built to solve the problem of overcrowded schools, more teachers would have been hired so students could have a better education, more supplies could have been bought for school so students wouldnt have to buy their own, more programs could have started, FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIPS COULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN!!! but we rather spend it on military/war...how crazy...dont u think???

China isn't exactly the poster child for the ideal education system. And, it seems as though your premise of "if we didn't spend so much on our military, we'd have more money for education" is inherently flawed, for two reasons. 1) If the money wasn't going into the war, it'd be going to pay off our huge debt we owe to China and Japan. Or something else insane. It's not the fault of the war that the education system is faulty. 2) State colleges are significantly cheaper than private colleges. The high cost of education is not because of the war.

Do a little research before you blog, ya?

The blogger raises an excellent point about the amount of money that goes into the military. And questioning what that says about the value system of our country is a very good educational exercise. Now, I was unable to ascertain whether the student drew these conclusions on her own after being presented with the numbers. That would be the ideal situation for the classroom. Give the kids the numbers, which are easy to prove or disprove, and let them discuss and draw their own conclusions. If that is how this blogger came by her beliefs, I think her teacher did a fine job. If not, the teacher may want to step back and examine his/her teaching a bit.
