On April 27, 2008 Tyler Cowen of The new york times wrote about rising food prices and their effect on millions. I quote from the article 'Freer trade could fill the worlds rice bowl' "Rising food prices mean hunger for millions and also political unrest, as has already been seen in Haiti, Egypt and Ivory Coast." This alone shows how much despair is spreading throughout the world. Although rice shortage is not the problem, many families all over the world with 1,2,3,4 or more children live in proverty and cannot afford to buy rice when it has roughly doubled in price since 2007. During these times the last thing any country needs is restrictions on trade, which would cause more shortages and higher prices. In conclusion I believe that this significant event is somewhat of a warning flag to many major countries, telling them value their domestic farmers and increase their self-sufficency and self-preservation.
P.S. As insignificant you may feel to this problem you can also make a change. Today I donated 2600 grains of rice to the UN and expanded my vocabulary at the same time by just taking a vocabulary quiz on freerice.com and for every point you gain 20 gains are added to a bowl.
