Speaking the language where you live

Someone once asked why I felt this way so I wrote about it.

The skill that I think that more people should master is speaking English and proper English. English is the main language in the United States, yet almost half of the people who live in the United States do not speak English or proper English. It is very hard to understand the people who do not speak English.       When I call my cell phone company and most of the other companies I have service with they have people answer the phone who do not speak English well. When I try to talk to them about my bill, or to change my plan it takes way too long and is very frustrating. When I go to a fast food place sometimes it is hard to order because I can not understand the employees and they can not understand me. Having a picture menu on the counter is a good thing. That way if the employee does not speak English well I can just point to the picture. But going through the drive through makes it difficult to order.       I think it is exceptional that people want to come and live here in America. I believe that they should have to take English classes before they can become a citizen. I know that some people do work very hard to learn English. There are percentages who do not take the time to learn English. Having employees who can speak more then one language is good but they also need to master the main language of where they live. Some businesses lose customers for the simple fact that they can not understand the employee. When I go to a business I want to be able to have a conversation with whom ever I need to talk to and be able to understand them. If it takes me too long to discuss what I came in there for, I will leave and find another company.
I also think that mastering English is important because if a person is hurt and needs help but they do not speak English then it is going to take a long time to get them help. If I were to find someone who needed help and they do not speak English I would get very upset because I would not know what they are trying to tell me. If they have to go to the hospital and there is no one there who speaks their language then they would be in trouble. It could be life threatening and no one would be able to help them.      We also have people who were born here who do not speak proper English well. They have made up their own words and some people have no clue what they are trying to say. When I worked at Friendlys as a waitress we had a waiter there who talked like that with the made up words. He slowly lost customers because they could not understand what he was trying to tell them. I had people tell me that they did not want to sit where he was working because it took too long to order, and they did not like the way he spoke to them. That made up language is fine when with friends but not in a place of business. When I am at a business I do not want someone to talk to me like we are on the street. At the business I am not their friend I am a customer. I want to be treated like a customer. Not speaking proper English is not good for business. Customers need to understand what is being said to them, and customers need to be understood.

This is why I think that more people should learn to master English and proper English. Learning how to speak English and proper English will help people to succeed in life and in the business world. Like I said before knowing how to speak more then one language is good, but people need to master the main language of where they live. People need to master the proper way of speaking English. Now of course if I was to move to another country then I would learn the main language. That way I would not have trouble living there and talking to people there. I believe other people should do the same. Sometimes I believe I need to learn the languages people speak to get by. I do not think I should have to. Should I?

I've been living in the US for almost 6 years and i totally agree. I started speaking english and my native tongue the same time i started talking so it is not a big problem for me. But i agree that when people come into your country that they should know how to speak the language of the country. People in other places get mad when I don't speak their language, but I totally feel for them because I wouldn't want someone living in my country, talking to me in a different language than what is spoken.
But talking about the internet and phone services, the people in the other line are usually living in another country since labor is much cheaper there so i try to understand them, also considering the fact that their probably working for 5 bucks a day trying to feed a family of 5. I try to get them to repeat, but sometimes they get frustrated with me and hang up the phone.lol.but i know that they're trying their best to help me.

Just a note (besides that I disagree with you), about 80 percent of Americans speak English, not barely half. Try to be a little more open to other cultures and languages. If you get the chance to travel internationally, take it...it really opens your eyes.

i do want to travel to other countries....but I would take the time to learn enough of their language to get by. i would not want them to have to try to understand me. i am a guest in their country. It is called RESPECT.

You should read my post "STOP SPEAKING ENGLISH!!!!" in my blog to see why I disagree with you, and why I think it is important to accept immigrants, even if they do not speak English immediately. Before you comment, be sure to read other people's comments on the page- my responses to them add a little more information.

I have a separate blog where I posted about this entry and thought you sheould have a chance to read and respond.

I wish you would have read my blog right. Because I did not say anything rude or did I say anything like you said I did. I did not down people for speaking another language. I just said they need to learn the language of where they live. I did give credit for the people who try to learn it. I know how hard it is for them. I have friends doing the same thing. So I am not racist not one bit. I even said if I was to move to another country I would lean their language. Again it is called respect. And why take parts of my blog to put in your own?? Try reading my blog again and this time don't judge it before you read the whole thing. Oh and to what you thought "proper" ment. well you were wrong. When I said proper I ment the MADE UP LANGUAGE that people talk. My son talks like that sometimes. But he knows only to talk like that aroung his friends. It is made up by teenagers. Like I said read it again.

Per your request, I reread your blog, and I stand by my points. I feel I have been similarly misread. I did not write my blog to down or in anyway bash you. It is not a reply, but rather an analysis and comparison of my opinion to yours. I do not think you racist in any way.
I took part's of your blog and put them in my own because I am in a discussion based course where we examine the stories that come across the Google Alert for the word "language". To support the points a person makes in an academic environment, it is common to cite the original source.
I would ask that you also re-read my post. If I were truly trying to bash you, I could have done so in secret on my blog, without taking the time and effort to register an account on this site, specifically with the intent of entering a dialogue with you.
Please understand my objections are not personally based.
