Are students really learning?

I have often wondered if I am of average intelligence like other students, or if I am unintelligent because I am lazy...You know how you have to take notes in class daily, print out online lectures, and participate in discussion classes? Well, what if you have short term memory, and you cannot remember what the teacher has said?

I have known that the method of rehearsal or studying consistently will help you remember things better, but is that what you would call learning? Sometimes I can remember some things in certain classes better than others because the material is more interesting, or I would thinks so, but other times I still don't do well when it comes to taking quizzes, etc. I may not remember what was mentioned in class once I leave that classroom, and instead go and hang out with my friends.

So how would you define learning? Is it based mainly on what you remember when you take quizzes and tests, or is it more of whether you enjoy something, and you are eager to know more about it? Is it called learning even when you forget about what you learned in a class after a couple of weeks or month? Sometimes, I think that we try to get a degree, and then staright on to get a job, and we don't keep the knowledge from years and years of school experiences, because we won't need them when we actually work...

I think we pick and choose what we store in our memory for long term to short terms. When I take a class just for an elective I think I am just her to get the credit to graduate with the degree of my choice. But If I like the class and enjoy the topic I learn more.
