Day three of my quest to find progressivism in the Pieces of Flair application on Facebook, and on the second page of recently popular Flair, I come across a white one with black footprints in the middle. Above the footprints, it reads "Don't follow in my footsteps," and below them, it continues, "I run into walls."
Humorous, yes? But if you really think about it...
Should anyone really be following in another person's footsteps in life? Sure, we have role models, people we look up to and aspire to be like. But will it really do any good to follow in their footsteps and be like them? Won't we have regrets in the end if we live our lives trying to emulate someone else?
Now, don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with looking up to someone. But instead of trying to be like that person, we would be much better off taking what we learn from them or what we admire about them and using to forge our own paths through life. In that way, we can be happy with our decisions, and truly be progressive.
Then I think about the second half of that little Flair message. "I run into walls." Don't we all run into walls? Everyone has to overcome obstacles in life, and there is no way around it. But what point is there in running into someone else's walls? Those obstacles have already been overcome by someone who went before you. There are other walls waiting to be gotten around out there: waiting for people like you and I to run into them.

I almost added that one. But it does have a point: our role models aren't perfect, and following them might lead to more trouble than you would think. We should be our own person, make our own mistakes.

I almost added that one, too. But then a much shinier one grabbed my attention.
I really love how I get to thinking about those pieces of flair that are simply humorous on the surface. Not that long ago, I wouldn't have given this one a second thought. I think a combination of this site and talking with my soon-to-be college classmates is having a positive effect on me. I am, slowly but surely, learning to think!
And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.
i totally agree with your blog role models are great but duplicates arent really..
