Democratic Representative Henry Waxman of California and Republican Representative Tom Davis of Virginia have uncovered a small conspiracy among Bush's government officials. Attempting to gather information reguarding global warming from the White House, they were repeatedly turned down. Upon further investigation, it is highly suspect that scientists were "pressured to downplay the threat". (CNN 2007) They were asked to remove evidence from a report or edit reports in order to make the problem seem insignificant. The U.N. will discuss the issue, putting the problem into perspective and allow for a possible solution. This report "is likely to influence the climate debate in Congress". (CNN 2007)
Bush has personal motives for downplaying the global warming issue. At this moment, he is waging a very expensive war with Iraq and he needs all the funding he can obtain. If making the issue of the near future seem less of a problem to get his funding, he will. Also, many people of the US are more concerned with what they deem as an immediate threat and will prioritize that over a future threat.
However, many Americans do not trust the government because of the many secrets kept from the public. Many believe the secrets the media has managed to uncover is only the tip of the iceberg. Not trusting in our government and its elected officials warrants a certain unstability in our society. It creates conflicts between individuals of different viewpoints, thus causing divisions in society to occur. Although the bond of unity of America has been stretched and pulled since the country's creation, it has yet to dissolve and throw our country into chaos.
Americans do not only distrust their government but also other Americans. Political ignorance of some Americans may enable the election of corrupt officials. The failure to prevent corrupt politicians from gaining office proves the political ignorance in our society is continually increasing. As of right now, small groups of political educators are attempting to resolve this lack of political intellect but more effort is required by the nation to correct this instability. The result is a rip between individuals and exemplifies the conflicts between social groups.
Finally, global warming is a world-wide dilemma. For this reason, important dignitaries from numerous countries are gathering together to discuss the concern and attempt to provide solutions. This demonstrates that societies from around the world, with different cultural and social values, all agree that the future of world security is of great importance.
