My friend broke her cell phone recently, an over $100 phone. She was completely miserable without it. She worried if she received any important phone calls or text messages. Yet she is only a teenager. It is quite interesting how teenagers would react without their cell phones, I-Pods or other MP3 device, laptops, etc. because many are so dependent on them. It is part of our society. Even little kids have cell phones. I understand the importance of safety and parenting for having cell phones but without them are we really in trouble?
There was once a time when none of these devices really existed and it wasn't that long ago. It was the 1990's actually. Technology is so fast and advancing every year and teenagers are addicted to newer things. It's true that being "in" with technology like with computers is important for today's society. This shows how necessary we need these devices and without them we are less organized, less safe, and don't have those conviences.
On another subject that is somewhat related, there have been laws in some states against people using cell phones while driving. I agree with this not unless you're using a hand-free set, because the cell phone does hinder a driver's concentration of the road and can lead to accidents. So is the cell phone a necessity or danger to our lives?

I know I'd die without my cell phone! It has my phone numbers, and is how I can talk to my boyfriend and my best friend! But I completely agree!

I feel priviliged to be one of the few people who don't own a cell phone, an i-Pod, or any other electronic device. I don't even have a laptop. This computer is the only thing I own, and I do actually own it. I bought it with my own money.
My life is so much freer. I think I'm one of those rare people who has time to sit out on the porch with a notebook and a pen (because I'm addicted to writing) and really enjoy myself.

That is a unique way to live but as for me, I like my cell phone and I need a laptop for college, but I do enjoy writting and using the postal mail sometimes.
Well, I will admit that if I could afford a laptop, I'd probably get one because it's more convenient than a regular computer, but as for a cell phone, I just bring money for a pay phone if I need to make a call. But that's just me.

"It is part of our society."
This is the answer to your post right here, and you said it. These things are generally misidentified as a problem, when it's really just the changing of the times. Anytime a device of convenience comes out, and becomes accessible and affordable to the common market, it will be adopted. There's nothing wrong with people using electronics as they do on average now, and in the future we will only come to use them more.
That said, of course there are people who rely TOO much on technology, but that can be said for anything.

sadly. i realized this when i was grounded from the phone. my celly.
i had it customized to where i could quickly view my to-do list, calendar, recieved text messages, and set my alarm clock. i even put daily notes on it. the most dependant part of it was probably the to-do list which included homework assignments, projects, shopping list items.
the phone part of it.... was my killer. i went over minutes. thinking that i just have to talk to my buddies all the time. i've used of 4,500 minutes a month before... and my highest for one month is just ridiculous.
i've never had test messaging as part of my plan. so i dont like them. but that could be the only thing stopping me.
so now... i get my cell phone on the weekends [to avoid sucking up minutes] (thank goodness for unlimited nights and weekends.)but. for organizational issues.... i've resorted to planners. calenders. and... *pause* the house phone for calls.. so the effect of technological dependence is reversible. have hope.
it's the parents providing things that can entertain kiddos in new ways. in different ways than good ol' playing tops could ever do.
It sounds like you are very attached to your electronics especially when you called your cell phone "celly". Wow, 45oo MINUTES? in one month? You might try a new phone plan or something or use your unlimited nights and weekends! :)
I use barely 200 minutes a month. But I've used up to 2400 text messages....so...yea.

I completely agree with this! It is sad what society thinks they need in order to function! Even adults have gotten to the point where they can't live without their electronics!
